good
this is considering the time morals, (I think antiquity era), as a protagonist wanting to leave a mark and have a prolonged and lasting legacy, the morals and ethics of the nation should guide through that, having a slow change towards that. I don't consider christian anti-hedonistic ethics to apply, as the time and mentality are not made for that, but for another approach of wanting a better lifestyle for the normal people (peasants).

this route of character will destroy the story, one of the situations that showed the fall of rome was depravity and inmorality, if the protagonist goes this way just don't make sense, he will be crippling and destroying the future of its empire, if the ruler is like this then how can he expect the future to be?

Why does he do all of this, invent things and still being a slave, looks like a pushover

Or drop the two mc idea, and focus on one
"But we would be separated," Jonathan said, concern etched on his face. "Look, it's not that I don't like working with you, I just want to build miracles. I don't want to be on the sideline anymore, I want to be on the mainstage. If you are going to invent automobiles or aircraft, then I'll build buildings, bridges, and metros."
History · SorryImJustDiamond
This is exactly what I was talking about with the power imbalance between both, one revolutionized the world while the other built higher buildings and underground, it is ridiculous the difference but he could have been smarter in negotiations, excellent businessman or alike to compensate. But no, Poul is better at all of that too. Just try to balance better the two mc idea as it is clearly not working as equals.

This is wrong, he is the co-founder, there is a difference between both words. One means I do it all, the other one, I do it with a team. Because both are mc, you shouldn't forget about these details, the history seems to be only of Poul, Jonathan only looks like a secondary
"I'm Poul Nielsen, founder of the Axelsen and Nielsen Air Brake Company. My specialty is mechanical and electrical engineering, though electrical engineering is in its infancy, soon it will take over the world."

the power mechanics between the two of them don't work. Paul has new technologies never seen while being a genius in math, but jonathan only has a new idea of civil engineering (the oldest one) with the less innovation to that world, while being stupid by asking the obvious, he should have a gold tongue or something business related to balance the relationship

the balance between them is extremely bad also, would prefer a big bang theory like balance, or at least Jonathan knows how to make businesses to compensate for this

In mining you can't increase productivity by working less, it isn't a desk job, you will only manage to decrease the output of material. What a stupid decision, even today mining is mostly done in third world countries with insane weekly hours (which is a response to our consumer society) based on this why would you enforce these ideas in a feudal society transitioning towards an industrial one. It is shooting yourself in the feet and capping your industrial idea.
It was not a glamorous life, but they would be paid a fair wage under Berengar's management and be allotted a proper forty-hour workweek with paid vacation time and sick days. It was best not to overwork your employees; if you were foolish enough to do so, you would see decreased productivity.
