Interrupted by who? One of Riftan's associates ...?

Before Maxi could object, the knight strode off to speak to a servant. However, he was interrupted by someone on his way back.

He wants to open something else with his teeth...

Riftan wordlessly extended his wounded limb as if telling the mage to get it over with. He pulled out a flask with his free hand and opened it with his teeth.

She thought he was going to be like her father - cold, violent, a bully. But Riftan thought she would be like her father - cold, greedy, manipulative & scheming.

Dazed from the drink, Lady Calypse blinked before slowly shaking her head. "I-I am not sure. I-I thought him dashing… b-but I was frightened… a-and nervous w-whenever I was close… s-so when… I f-first learned I was to m-marry him… I-I only wanted to run away. H-He looked like a v-violent man."

This is why Ruth and Riftan are such a good team. Ruth destroyed the illusion spell, but Riftan was already saving himself from it.

"Things could have gone horribly wrong," Ruth said, handing Riftan a cup of warmed wine. "I think the golem was meant to cast a powerful illusion spell in the event of its destruction. If I hadn't been there, all of you would have been trapped in it and frozen to death."

I wonder if it's a translation issue, I thinkit actually means they cut off the feet. Elsewhere in the book, it mentions cutting off criminals' necks or wrists... I suspect in English we would say head or hands, but in Korean perhaps they refer to where on the body the cut is made, instead of what body part was removed.

Soon, two knights who had been on patrol returned with three black-feathered birds the size of geese. Grabbing the birds by the wings, the knights twisted and ripped the appendages off at the joints and discarded them on the ground. Then, with one swift motion, the skin was pulled clean off. Maxi froze in shock. Next, the knights sliced off the legs with a dagger before casually tossing them onto the pile of feathers. Feeling her stomach turn, Maxi hastily withdrew to the safety of the carriage.

True. I can't think of anything hotter than a man on fire for his lady, but still treats her like a lady.

He guided her hand down his body. She felt his hardness throbbing under her palm and gave a start. She tried to snatch her hand away, but his grip on her arm was too firm.

Riftan's POV... it's almost all available on here, just a couple of chapters left to be released over the next couple of weeks.

With that, he turned around as if to say he had no further business and walked across the room to his bed. She was watching him blankly when Riftan plunked himself down and pulled her toward him, evidently annoyed.

I'm 5'2" & my husband is 6'4"... I think the picture is pretty accurate TBH.

She almost had to run to keep up with Riftan's long strides. If it were not for Riftan's quick reaction, she would have tripped over the bumpy ground countless times. They followed the ditch and came to a stop before a large wooden structure that emerged in the dark.

I don't know... the king never seems to feel guilt or personal responsibility, he acts like all his subjects are just useful tools for his convenience.

After watching the rain fall for a while longer, Riftan went to his room and started on the letter to send to Drachium. No doubt King Reuben would be furious. It was because of Riftan that His Majesty's plan to tame the duke was now up in smoke. The king would surely be incensed that his loyal hound had put teeth to its master's hand.

It seems like he's saying more than she realises here. Most of his life has been pretty awful up to this point.

"This was all I could think about while I was stuck in that living hell. The feel of your body, you melting in my arms… I've wanted this for so long."

It's the pattern of his life... he felt inadequate and unwelcome in his own family as a child, then spent his adult life feeling inadequate & unwelcome in society, even felt inadequate amongst the RDK to some extent. He knew the RDK worked solely on a merit system but still he tried to refuse being their commander.

He squeezed his eyes shut. The memory of his stepfather silently weeping in the dark on the day of his mother's funeral lingered in his mind's eye. The man had given up twelve years for them. Riftan could not let him lose his life over a fake son after having finally managed to build a family of his own.

The king needed a hobby... a *different* hobby.

The King had as many as twenty sons but when the King passed away, only five of these princes were alive, including the Crown Prince. In contrast to this, the King's twenty-six princesses were mostly alive.

Well, strictly speaking, he is hunting a monster. It's just a very, very long game with this one.

"Yes, through monster hunting. I brought my men here as soon as I heard about the sightings of profitable monsters in this area, but they proved false. Over the past few weeks, the only creatures we've come across are werewolves and the undead. I've suffered untold losses because of it."
