Also, it fits in with his desire to live the rest of his life like a normal person, peacefully. He's started treating himself like a normal person ever since he got off Roger's crew, so I think it also makes sense from that angle. Well, I understand how it can sound strange though.

Right, I just thought it somehow fit with Rayleigh's character. He doesn't seem to be too prideful since, in canon, he calls himself "Just an old man who coats ships." In traditional trades that take on apprenticeships, it's common for the apprentices to call the one teaching them "Master." It has more the connotation of 'skilled teacher,' so I made that decision with all of that in mind.
