The miners are heading to work, and a squirrel is watching them
Her father had been coughing again in the night. Arani heard it through the wall — the deep, tearing cough that seemed to claw its way out of his chest. She got up, pulled on an old dwarven uniform coat, and stepped out into the yard. It was too broad in the shoulders for her, even after being taken in to fit her 9-year-old frame. The sleeves had to be rolled up, and one copper button did not match the others — they had replaced it after the old one tore loose. Arani fastened the collar. The cloth smelled of dust, iron, and something faded and masculine. In it, she looked like a little general — stern and determined. Her face was still entirely childlike, and only her emerald eyes seemed too deep for a little girl.
