I mean, he was suicidal so he isn't really mentally stable. take it from someone who has been there, it's a state of desperation and need to escape to the point where you don't care what comes next as long as whatever you're experiencing is over. I think by definition if you're suicidal it rules out you being mentally stable lol

when a person grows up without positive attention from their parents, they can act foolishly when presented with the opportunity to get it despite years of proof not to trust their parents. of course, normally people who forgive their abusers have been subject to the cycle of abuse - apologize - love bomb - abuse, or similar. so they can become desensitized to the bad and desperately crave the good moments like a starving animal begging for food scraps. might be different in situations where a parent consistently expresses disdain, but up until his power manifested he did get support from them so it's possible that part of him still hopes to regain that because it was the only time he had been treated well and he doesn't know better. of course, that's assuming real world logic applies. and it often doesn't in stories.
