i get what you mean, he's been part of the system long enough for it to make sense that he should discard it right. I think of it as him trying to hold onto his already-waning humanity. You can tell based on his actions he will do what must be done, but him saying the things he does and going through the thought process at the very least of old world sensibilities he is trying to convince himself. We see towards the end of Volume 3 what makes him change dramatically.
