The main character is weak currently. The 'Hachimon Tonkou' is basically based on the potential of the user. So the greater the basic stats are, the stronger the gates become. In the anime, Lee, who had the help of chakra, was almost 10 times stronger than a normal human while the MC is only 4-5 times stronger so his gates are weaker.
