They still existed. But almost as an afterthought rather than a core component and driving force of this reality.

Also, pushing myself to keep up with the public release schedule is just running me ragged. I feel like I can't ever take a break, even when I need to. I'm determined to finish out this story (or at least get it to a satisfying stopping point where I can cut back my attention on it). So in light of all of that, I'm going to be pulling back the schedule to 2 chapters a week (Friday, Sunday).
