Gold would be quite useful, when the conflict starts, but it might be better, if it ends on a smaller scale. The British might be willing to give in, if they can get their money without much fighting, then having gold might come in handy to pay them off.

It seems a war is inevitable, but I think it would be better for the Carpenters not to join the war immediately, but collecting supplies and other resources first, since them joining and turning the tide, when the colonies were losing, would give their contibutions a greater impact. I think the war hawks and the unreasonable ones on both sides need to be bloodied first, which would give John a better position to negiotiate a compromise later. I think the British would appreciate a face saving way out, if the fortunes and cost of war turn against them.
