So he would have to actively kill people to survive. And no matter his choice, he would loose one of his gatest strengths: controlling/summoning zombies. There will be none left. Unless the ones in the system do not get cured? But that seems pretty messed up. Preventing mindless zombies from healing back into conscious people and returning to what family and friends they may have left? Just on the off chance that he may need them in the future?? ... This is unclear. It sounds like he is part of the Dark Zombies when says "us". But in the very same sentence claims not to know anything about "them", as if he isn't?

So, maybe a gladiator arena situation? Especially when coupled with Darts advice to survive and their cell-mate's observation about not seeing new people again after they're taken away (only the veterans remain in the cells long).

That was revealed with his last dream (flashback). Trying to drown out the noise of abuse/domestic violence. And the faceless man saying he always has a choice. The author may not have directly stated that Zain did anything at that time in his past. But considering Kelly's earlier thoughts about how Zain served time in juvie, how he was a murderer... I think his past is pretty clear.
