PAMALI
'Pamali' is a taboo/ prohibition that should not be done. Pamali is usually spread all over the place until often we have no idea where pamali came from. Reportedly, the ancestors or earlier people who provide information about those pamali.
Pamali is basically a customary ban on something that should not be done or done for a reason that sometimes does not make sense. But from cultural research, many pamali actually make sense, such as the prohibition of killing animals that are mating or are pregnant. In some areas in Indonesia there are pamali which states that killing game animals that are mated or are pregnant will result in misfortune for the hunter and his descendants. Now it is proven that pamali is useful as one way to preserve nature.
Violation of the prohibition that includes pamali can bring some consequences, such as admonishment of the elderly, customary punishment, in addition to unseen sanctions, such as suddenly become insane or change of mind, difficult to get a mate, even threatened to die suddenly.
Basically pamali is governed by custom for some purpose. First, maintain the courtesy and prestige of the traditional elders. Second, preserve nature, including animal preservation. Third, educate the community to be careful.
In addition to the three types of pamali earlier, there are also pamali that does not make sense when viewed from the intent and purpose. Pamali that include this type of ban such as wearing a green color on almost along the southern coast of Java, the ban calls the name of a tiger or cheetah on the island of Java and Sumatra. Other pamali that belong to this type is a ban on dirty talk or indecent things in the forest and on the tops of the mountain.
(Pamali about tiger's name also exist in Borneo/ Kalimantan… my father often forbidden me and his worker to call a name of female tiger sprite, especially at night time. If not, she will come and attack you. And at that time I was just 5 years old, one of my father worker didn't believe him and challenged it at midnight. Not long after, a beautiful woman came to him. At first they talked and flirt with each other. Then he invited her to his room. Just as he thought he finally will get a Beauty, he was attacked and his back was injured. Other worker came to his room and found him asleep but like he had some nightmare. They woke up him. At first he thought that was dream but yet he felt so much pain in his back and they all notice his back really have wound like being swiped by tiger's claws. That incident caused an uproar at my father's company and those workers didn't dare to do those stupid things again, for fear that misfortune would befell them.)
Actually there were many supernatural things happened around us. (At least around me and my family because our family have long history that was linked to those supernatural fenomena, starting from our ancestors and up until now. Our family often get involved with that stuff because we can see those 'invisible' beings. But as time goes… not many descendants of our family inherited that 'gift' again. Currently it was just my father, me and my little sister. My brother can't see them but he can feel them stronger than ordinary people. But that was not a pleasant thing for me so I told my father to close my inner eyes. Then I could not see them again. At least that was what I thought. 😒 But it was useless! I can still feel them or see them around me. And some animals will be attracted to me (I like this part). But after my little sister born, looks like my power was weakened and I've been laughed at by my little brother because of that. He said my power was stolen by our little sister. And he took pleasure upon my misfortune. Damn you! I really wanted to kicked him at that time when he laughed non-stop at me. Maybe he was happy he will not be the only one of us that have such weak talent. 😑 Even if I didn't like this power that doesn't mean I want to hear something like that from my little bro
