Chapter 3: Lost Art

My class is called Basics of Cultivation. Even past Shen Xiu knew what a joke it was. Glory City knowledge about cultivation was so poor and disjointed, that it could be compressed into a couple of hours of study, but somehow it was stretched into a year-long course full of anecdotes, repetition, test. It was a waste of time, that somehow received recognition and public acceptance.

Old fossils gave some justification for it being educational, beneficial, thought-provoking and diving talent from trash. Shame turned into a fetish - that is what it was, without being romantic or kinky. My wardrobe was a reflection of that fact - if they won't learn anything, they could at least have something to look forward to.

A situation that was shameful for a cultivator, was pure agony for a magus. I have spent these five lessons trying to pass as much real knowledge about basics as possible and gave all of my students homework to find a proper definition of cultivation. Once I finish with actual basics (by the end of this week), I will guide collective efforts to rediscover magic theory inscribed into this world.

These five hours could have become a torture, If I didn't have self-hypnosis to keep me from thinking Nie Li and his secrets. Finally, time is up and I'm back at my office awaiting the boy. Once again my door slides open to reveal expected guest, accompanied by Mrs. Feng, one of the senior teachers, that have same cultivation rank as me, despite being 15 years older. I could almost approve his paranoia.

- Mrs. Feng, Mr. Li, welcome. - I greeted her politely. - How could I help you?

- Tea would be nice, Ms. Shen, but I came here to support this young man in his apologies. - Shen Xiu's memories show her as competent, compassionate teacher. There was slight disapproval in her eyes focused on my chest.

- I have Northern Rose and Western Dragon, which brand does Mrs. Feng prefers? - both brands were nice and slightly expensive.

- Dragon is more to my taste, dear. - she took a seat at the side table, leaving Nie Li to stand at the door.

- So how much did he tell you? - I asked while brewing a tea.

- He said, he was too enthusiastic at your lesson yesterday and couldn't properly apologize to you this morning. - she glanced at him.

- I see, boys these days ... are same as old days and my wardrobe choices didn't help at all. Poor child, promised to reach 1-star bronze rank within 2 months, despite having only 5 soul force and red soul sea. Even extracted a promise of my resignation in case of success.

- Such a hot-blooded youth. - said the woman with a glaze in her eyes. At the same time, Li was openly glaring at me.

- I can respect honest appreciation. - I said, setting tea set at her side, while taking a place between them. Then I flared my aura. - But his words, suggest that he knows Basics better than me. - magecraft took effect. Student, Nie Li, words are cheap, be silent, take that seat and write an essay on the Basics of Cultivation - you have an hour. - time-traveler took his place and started writing, now I just need to distract this aunty with some small talk.
