Chapter 2: Chapter Two

CHAPTER TWO

After a short briefing about his duties and responsibilities, and after signing his work contract, Carlo left the cafe. After leaving the café, he immediately felt like a huge weight was taken off his shoulders. He finally had a job, and though it was just as a barista slash waiter, with what he had been experiencing for the past week, it was a cause for celebration. After the continuous hardships that he faced, and it wasn't only from this week, from the moment he came to this city, hardships were the only things he faced, barely any happy moments came to him. Even his graduation, he nearly couldn't attend it, if he wasn't able to pay the last remaining balance in his tuition, he might not have been able to get his graduation certificate. Even after his graduation, he barely had any time to relax and celebrate this occasion, while some of his batch mates celebrated, or went back to their respective homes; he was getting fired from his jobs. While they were starting their interviews and receiving invitations from companies, he couldn't even get past the various companies front door; and his resumes were probably in the trash can.

What he was most thankful of was that the place he got hired in was only a 45 minute walk to his building. It might have seemed long to others, but considering the fact that his last two jobs were about two bus rides away from the building even though it was close to his school. He didn't have to pay any bus fees, or run about five kilometers early in the morning just to save money.

About 45 minutes later, he was already walking down the familiar streets near his building when suddenly, his good mood turned sour. Right outside the building was his landlord talking to one of the other tenants of the building. He immediately hid behind a wall, he knew he couldn't escape pass him, not unless he wanted to go to the back of the building and climb the fire escape, which, not only was hard, it was also extremely noisy and had high risks of being identified as a burglar. While thinking of his options, he suddenly heard a voice behind him.

"HEYY!! It's Carlo, what are you doing hiding behind this wall? Are you hiding from someone?" The person who had spoken was another one of the tenants in the building, Evan. Evan was one of his friends, one of his very few friends, and to emphasize on how few his friends were, Carlo only had two of them.

Evan's most notable quality was that, even though he was kind-hearted and strong-minded, he was loud. He was so loud that his landlord and the other tenant turned their heads to look at them when he greeted Carlo.

Carlo was a bit infuriated with this friend of his, especially since he knew that Evan knew about his situation with his landlord. His anger must have shown in his eyes that his friend displayed a look of confusion towards him. Then for just a little bit, he got distracted, something was a bit different with how Evan looked today. He looked at Evan for a few moments trying to determine what was odd about him.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Evan asked.

Carlo looked at him long and hard, racking his brain what was odd about his friend today.

Carlo was forced to stop his staring contest with his friend when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Turning around, he saw his landlord behind him. Carlo's landlord was a 32 years old man named Chis; he graduated in business management and inherited the building from his grandmother. He had a good family background, and was considered to be a good man, and if it weren't for the fact that he wanted to kick Carlo out, they would've gotten along.

Carlo sighed, this time he had no choice but to truly face the fact that he had to move out. Although he moved his stuff away from his room, he still left behind some of the necessities hoping he won't get kicked out . Before Chris could say a word, Carlo immediately spoke, "Don't worry sir, I found a job, if I have the money, I would immediately pay my rent in full, without the discount. So please don't kick me out. I promis…."

"Whoa, enough young one, are you okay? What are you talking about? What rent? Don't you worry about anything okay?" Then he let out a hearty and loud laugh.

"What?"

"I said don't worry about it. You don't need to worry about rent. It's already paid."

"What?"

At this moment, Evan decided to butt in, "Yeah, Carlo, is that what you were worried about? Your rent!? You don't need to worry, you know what kind of person Mr. Chris is, right?" Then he gave out another hearty laugh. His tone sounded a bit sarcastic, but Carlo didn't have time to worry about that, he was very confused at this moment.

"What?"
