Chapter 1: Summer Camp

The people always say, that time heals all wounds, but I just can't feel it. The hole in me, in my life, my soul is just as gaping as it was a year ago. A hole in the shape of my Mother which just does not close! The edges are less sharp and more washed out, but there is nothing there to fill it. Even Emma, my best friend, my companion, my sister can not close this wound. And Dad isn`t even trying, because he himself is lost in his own mum-shaped hole. All I can do is trudge on and hope that time will come trough.

I used to like summer camp, the quiet nature of life away from the city. The birds singing in the morning and the freedom to explore the world, but I just can't get in the mode this year. It is like the pain has dulled my senses and taken all the fun out of this world. I miss Emma, she is the only one who can make me feel alive anymore. When I am with her I can forget my collapsed world and just fell like myself for a few precious moments.

Miss Abalon, one of the camp's caretakers, always tells us that we have to make the best of every moment. And that is what I am trying to do, I have even started knitting and tried woodworking, but without Emma, the spring in my burned soul, there is no joy no laughter to be found within me. Luckily, tomorrow is the last day and I will be able to see her again. I can't wait to see her, to bask in her presence and just forget the world for a few hours. Tomorrow just can't come fast enough.

Of course, Dad did not come to pick me up, I am not even sure he noticed that I was gone for 3 weeks. It has already been an hour and no one has come to pick me up, I wish I had a phone, just this once. It looks like it is starting to rain soon. The caretakers have long since left and I am standing here alone in the middle of downtown. I guess I will have to walk home, maybe I can stay at Emma's place for a few days. Not like Dad will notice.

I decide to do just that and start walking in the direction of Emma's house. It will take a few hours but that is better than waiting for someone to pick me up. I just hope Emma is home.

It starts raining, my luggage bag is getting socked and my old jacket has to many holes to really protect me from the rain. My feet are getting wet because my too-tight shoes have too many holes to still be considered functioning footwear. I guess I should be grateful that Emma's mother went shopping with me before I left for summer camp. Otherwise, I don't think I would have any clothes to wear anymore. I have grown another 5cm just in the last 2 months and it shows. I hope we will go shopping for school supplies again, I don't think Dad even remembers that I am starting Highschool this year. Even if he did, we have no money, the bastard who killed her ran, so we had to pay the funeral ourselves.

The rain continues to fall and my backpack grows heavier and heavier. My feet hurt, my back hurts and my glasses are so fogged and dirty that I can bearly see the end of the street. In the past, I would have cried but there are no tears left inside me, so I just soldier on until I reach Emma's house. The only though keeping me upright is the promise of my best friend, my Sun, she will make everything alright.
