Chapter 28: Volume 2 Episode 22

Daniel Kang. A third year at Drakon Academy, Daniel is a user of Earth magic and a damn good one at that. He had participated in last year's tournament as well, placing at fifth in the end. Apart from his talents in magic, he was also proficient in martial arts.

'Of all the people, why do I have to face this guy?'

Luke was cursing in his mind at his rotten luck. Daniel Kang is a monster who enjoys beating the crap out of people. Fighting him meant that Luke had basically sealed his fate. He had absolutely no chance in winning against Daniel, at least not face to face.

'Should I try to run?' He thought of running, but he had no confidence to outrun Daniel.

'What to do?'

"Oy, what are you doing thinking while in the middle of a fight? Do you honestly think I won't attack you?"

Daniel came dashing towards him as he was trying to think. He didn't want his enemy to even have a moment of clarity, or a moment to think. Daniel's words woke up Luke from his thoughts and saw the incoming attack. He tried to dodge the attack but suddenly the ground around him started shaking, making him lose his footing. It was Daniel's doing, who was an earth magic user, and as soon as his opponent was disorganised, he raised his foot and slammed down on his face. Luke tried to block it using his arms by enveloping them with flames, but Daniel already expected that and immediately countered it by covering his whole leg with mud, making it both a protective layer and a weight enhancer. His legs easily passed through the burning flames and hit Luke's arms, causing him to slam into the ground once again.

"AHH!!" Luke screamed in pain as both his hands had been burning with pain. Judging by the force at which he took the attack, his arms would most likely be fractured.

"Oy, is that it? Come on, I just started. If you give up now, how will I be able to enjoy myself? So why don't you do me a favor and get up? Or do you want me to make you get up?"

Even with Luke on the ground, Daniel didn't stop. He wanted to make his opponent feel despair. He liked to see the look in their eyes when they completely lost hope. It was for his pleasure.

"Shit, what the f**k have I gotten myself into?" As he was laying on the ground, Luke was contemplating on his decision to enter the competition. He regretted joining this stupid tournament. He regretted wanting to get back at Lin. He regretted ever assuming he could have a shot at winning. But he didn't want to give up. He didn't want his decisions to be a waste. He desperately wished for a miracle to appear, saving him from this monster.

"GRRRR!"

A sudden growl loud enough to shake even the sturdiest of trees echoed throughout the forest, stopping Daniel at his tracks. Luke too, looked warily at the direction from which the growl came. Then he looked at Daniel, who looked back at him. Both of them nodded at each other, and ran away in different directions. Luke, who had both of his arms fractured, started running as if he was scared for his life.

"Shit, shit shit! I asked for a miracle not a f**king disaster!" He screamed as he ran with all his might. Whatever the growl was, it had scared the hell out of him.

The Kito Jungle.

Southernmost Plains.

April Yan was healing her wounds while sitting on a rock. She looked tired and her clothes had been torn from attacks. She had her hair tied up in a ponytail, and was applying potions on her body. It seems that she was in a fight until only recently. Suddenly she stood up and pointed her hands at a tree near her, causing ice crystals to shoot out of her fingertips. The sharp crystals hit the tree, but a shadow like figure was seen for a split second, jumping from the tree down to the ground.

"Spying on people like always. You really thought I wouldn't notice you Roger?"

"haha… I should've been more careful I guess. Well, you and I would've met either way, so I thought, might as well spy for any information." April had guessed correctly, as the shadow like figure came into viewing. It was indeed Roger Rodriguez, an electricity magic user. He and April were both third years, and it seemed that there was some history between them.

"Well, now that I've been discovered, I would like to request a temporary peace treaty. I promise that I won't attack you and you won't attack me for a limited period of time, how about it?" Roger with a large smile plastered across his face spoke with confidence to the clearly irritated April about his real intentions.

"Why would I believe you?"

"Hey, I said I would promise, didn't I?"

"You and I both know your promises mean shit Roger."

"Don't be like that April, you know that this treaty is the best scenario for you right now." Said Roger as he stared at April's still healing wounds.

April knew this as well. She wasn't in good shape from the continuous attacks of Sam Lee and Jessie Brenner one after the other. In the end she had defeated both of them, but she had to pay a heavy price. She wasn't in top form, and if she chose to fight against an enemy in that condition, she'd most likely lose. Especially if that enemy is someone as strong as Roger, who had finished third during last year's school tournament.

"You know that choosing my deal is the best option right now. Besides, you heard that growl too, right? If I'm right, then after the growl comes the roar. And you know that's not something we can take out on our own." Roger suddenly turned serious. His face was cold, completely contrasting the smiling appearance he had just a minute ago, indicating April to make a decision soon.

April too turned more serious. She knew what he meant. If he's right then..

"Are you sure of it?"

"Yes I am. The circle is going to get smaller in a few minutes, which means most of us will be in an even closer range. That would definitely make an even more ideal situation for it."

April bit her lips. She had to make a choice.
