Chapter 2: Wolves and Turnips

I am consumed by the sensation of falling and upon impact of hitting the ground, I was jolted awake. What in the world happened? Was i dreaming? It took a moment for me to regain my bearings and realize I was lying on grassy ground. I stood up and checked myself for any kind of injury 'cause I was so sure I fell from the sky. Finding nothing, I scan the surrounding. It was eerily dark but the moon was still able to provide a dim glow for me to view what is within nearby areas. Not like there was much since all I can see are protrusion of ginormous roots connected to wide trunks of moss-covered trees. Trees so huge it should not exist. The dense forest spreads as far as the dark allowed my eyes to picture.

"Where am I?" I asked myself. Still on the verge of disbelief, I slap both side of my cheeks, real hard. "Ouch! So I am not dreaming? How did I end up in the middle of this huge forest?" I blurted out. I swear if somebody answered I would've bolted right then and there. Thankfully nobody did.

Then, like my brain just reattached itself from the freefall I experienced and just now starting to function again, I remembered the most pressing matter.

"Jit!" I called out. "Are you there?" Jit was abducted by a beam of light from the sky and I was caught up while trying to save her. If I am alive, she should be alive and here in this place too.

Hesitantly, I started to walk around. I am not particularly scared of the dark but being alone in a middle of a gigantic forest at night can really deal a huge blow to your confidence.

"Jitana!" I called out again, a little louder this time. I continued walking with no sense of direction whatsoever. Following a small path in between tree roots, I search for any trace of Jitana. I kept walking for God knows how long but found no sign of her. I was already tired and thirsty. My clothes are now full of different kinds of twigs and leaves and all other dirt I can't recognize. Seeing myself like this made me chuckle humorlessly. "So much for confessing today huh."

A rustle behind a bush just ahead of me snapped me back to attention.

"Jit! Jit is that you?" I shouted as i half walk half run towards the direction of rustling bush. I walk past through the vegetation but immediately stopped on my tracks. Approximately 50 meters away from me, a grey wolf-like creature, easily twice my size with long tusks protruding on both sides of its snout, sharp claws raised in the air and about to pounce on a... white thing on the ground. Is that a turnip? On the verge of being slashed into bits the turnip quickly dodged to the side and rolled over until it was by my feet.

Uh-oh. I can't even bring myself to look ahead. I felt a cold gaze shifted towards my direction that made all the hairs on my body stand up.

I knew I should have left the moment I saw whatever this creature is, but it is too late now since it seems I have disturbed its dinner and it already discovered me. I remembered a book I read, if you are faced with a potentially dangerous animal, any unnecessary movement that can imply that I am a threat should be avoided so I observed the movement of the wolf beast as it stood still rooted in its place. I glanced at the tiny white turnip by my feet contemplating if I can use it as bait when suddenly it moved again then two green chinky eyes were staring back at me.

"What the!" I exclaimed as the wolf beast started to run towards me obviously alerted by the sudden movement. With one swoop i picked up the turnip and run to the opposite direction. Why bother pick it up if you are wondering? Well it was frigging alive! How can I let it be feasted upon by that monster?

With all strength left in me i ran like i never ran in my life. Without looking back, I ran through sharp branches blocking my way not minding the cuts and bruises I get. I can hear the growling of the wolf beast chasing after me getting louder as it gets closer until i can almost feel its breath on my neck.

I felt a sharp pain in my back as the wolf beast tackles me from behind making me fall hard to the ground, its tusk punching holes on my sides. I was bleeding but luckily the wound was not fatal. With the turnip like creature still clutched on my arms, i crawled forward only to be blocked by the roots of a huge tree. I was effectively cornered.

I guess this is it for me.

The turnip like creature decided it felt uncomfortable being clutched within my arms and started walking towards my shoulder. Now that I got a better view of it, it resembles more like a fox, a very white fox with green eyes. What made me think it was a turnip was the green leaf like fur in its forehead and ears as well as its tail. It was rather beautiful. I pick it up from my shoulder and placed it on top of the roots so it can easily jump over.

"Go ahead. At least one of us should be saved. Go and run!" I told the white fox as if it can understand me.

The wolf beast is now closing in, approaching slowly like a real predator finally catching its helpless prey.

"Go!" I gave the white fox another nudge. But instead of running away, it climbed back onto my shoulder. I had no time to pushed the little guy away as the wolf launch itself at me.

This is really it for me. Sorry Jit. I couldn't even find you!

I raised my hand to cover myself instinctively. That's when i felt it. Pressure accumulated simultaneously on both my palms. Just when the wolf was inches away from devouring me, the pressure blasted from my palms hitting the wolf with such force that sent it flying hundreds of meters away. I was still shocked partly in fear and partly in awe at the sudden turn of events when I heard a voice spoke from out of nowhere.

"Nice shot."

I tried to locate where the voice came from amidst the confusion but exhaustion coupled with anxiety finally consumed me as I saw a silhouette of a man before my eyes blur and I completely pass out.
