...

It was daybreak.

The sun was preparing for its ascend to heaven to announce yet another beginning of a phase for everyone beneath its reign.

In the deafening silence, loud noises altered the quiet atmosphere and filled the area. An unlit cigarette on her lips was moving up and down as her teeth were nipping the filter. She tossed the broken CCTV and the useless gun into the trash that made these thin clanks before it became soundless again.

A while ago, Young Mirae shot the annoying camera with a bullet when she sensed as though someone was watching her. After wasting two bullets for a surveillance camera, the gun ran out of ammo.

She couldn't help it. She felt irritated about the shitty CCTV the time she parked the 'borrowed' motor at the back of the fried chicken store in the gloomy alley.

A question entered her mind while it was in wonder. Could those people wearing blue brooches be pursuing a search for her by now? That might be true because they wanted her dead.

In any case, what was she thinking of driving through a fried chicken's tight alley? There was a 'major' and 'important' reason for this.

By the time she was speeding away from Suwon, her city, an alluring aroma of savory and sweet tickled her senses, which caused her to pull the vehicle over without hesitation.

Yes, it was 'important' because she craved to eat this chicken.

While patiently waiting, an appearance abruptly prevented Young Mirae from pondering. There was a creature creeping toward the trash can that suddenly showed up before her eyes.

"What are you looking at? Is it your first time seeing a woman looking wrecked and dressed in bloodstained pajamas, huh?" she bellowed to the puppy who looked at her.

Upon yelling, the small puppy halted. Sharing gazes within a minute, the puppy soon ignored Young Mirae and continued to scavenge for a meal.

"Did you just scoff at me?"

That was a lie. The dog was innocent, yet Young Mirae wanted to start a fight. Henceforth, what followed this boiling of anger was the sudden wave of her hand.

She threw the unlit cigarette she was chewing earlier in the direction of the animal. She did not particularly target the dog. Rather, she aimed at the trash can that created this thin clink, which scared him.

"Don't eat those. Chicken bones are not good for you, puppy," Young Mirae chased out, watching the dog haste with its small legs and almost leaving its shadow.

Releasing a deep sigh, she stood from the motorcycle seat. She pulled a key from her pocket in the jacket she 'borrowed' and opened the trunk.

Before a backup from the people who were chasing her down could show up earlier, she made a quick check for anything valuable from the two enemies she killed. She kept the jacket, the motorcycle's key, a box of cigarettes, and a couple of money.

'Grand-gran should have brought along an envelope1 along with this stupid document.' She frowned.

If possible, she would have had no problem if there was money besides the yellow folder, so that she could begin her revenge on her enemies in an instant. After all, without cash, she could not meet the dealers, contact them and buy firearms.

'I miss them already…'

Sulking, Young Mirae grabbed the folder she inserted inside the trunk. She peeked inside its contents and closed the under-seat storage with her free hand.

'Is this my new identity?'

While Young Mirae was reading the information about the supposedly 'new' her written on the papers, she felt this weird sensation inside her stomach. It seemed odd to her that she had to live, introduce herself to other people as a completely different person, not as Young Mirae.

She had never thought all this would happen, nor she would wish for it.

Young Mirae inhaled a sharp breath from her mouth. Her gaze traced upon the photo attached to what seemed to be the bibliography. A line formed between her brows as she found that the person in the photo looked exactly like her. Excluding the different colors and lengths of their hair.

"Ah." An audible excitement left her lips. Unbelievable, Young Mirae never knew that she could rock styling her hair short—

"Eh, no. What am I doing?" She shook her head and snapped out of the stupid thought. Young Mirae flipped through the papers until she reached the last one. There, she noticed it wasn't an ordinary folder, but a one-pocket folder.

She spotted a card peering in the pocket. Pulling it out, Young Mirae realized it was South Korea's national identification card. Apart from this, she also had a passport and driver's license.

It was a complete package. A creepy feeling touched the back of her neck and gave her goosebumps around her body: all were odd for her since she didn't recall applying for another national identification card.

Young Mirae's assessment of the situation ran wild. "And what is this? I've never had short hair and bangs. I don't remember taking this picture!"

She refused to claim it was her in the photo. It looked authentic that Young Mirae thought it was from another person and someone stole it.

And when did she wear such dull-looking glasses as well? Ew, that looked disgusting to her. She would never wear glasses. "That's an instant toss in the garbage."

No, wait, did she say the picture looked authentic?

Her eyes widened in surprise; her jaw dropped, fitting for a big fly to enter. To Young Mirae, the identification cards and documents felt as though it was from...her doppelgänger?

Oh no, that did not feel right. Perhaps there was something else she missed, the most crucial of all. Did her grandfather and grandmother hide the fact that she had...an identical twin sister?!

"No way!" A sharp gasp protruded from her lips. Her assessment of the unraveled secret ran wild. "What the hell is happening?"

Who would have thought that Young Mirae was messing around without knowing she had a twin sister all along? How could her parents and grandparents hold such a secret behind her back for twenty-four years?

"C-Customer, this is your order. A b-b-box of spicy fried chicken wings, right?"

When her ears caught the candied words, her eyes sparkled when she saw it. There, the female employee stood in front of her, bringing Young Mirae's box of spicy fried chicken wings. Immediately, Young Mirae averted her attention from the intense revelation that she just uncovered.

Candied? Absolutely not. The poor female employee was shaking in fear of seeing someone covered in scraps and bloody clothes.

Considering that Young Mirae could not go around walking in the area with bloodstains on her clothing, she 'asked' the employee who witnessed her taking down the CCTV earlier, for a 'favor'.

"And the chocolate bar?"

"H-Here, ma'am." The employee placed the chocolate bar atop the box of spicy chicken wings.

"Yehey, great! As promised, I'll give you a few extra bucks and this box of cigarettes for you!"

After celebrating, Young Mirae motioned her forefinger and asked the female employee to lend her an ear. Upon doing so, Young Mirae loomed near and mouthed a hiss: "You didn't call the police, right?"

"O-Of course not."

When Young Mirae heard her stuttering answer, a smile crept on her lips. She backed away, waved a hand, and said, "Good, you can go now."

The female employee shakingly looked away after completing the deal that was exclusive between her and Young Mirae. She dashed into the door leading inside the back kitchen of the fried chicken store by the moment she received the tip and the box of tobacco.

Young Mirae hummed as she popped the lid of her order unlatched. Immediately, the savory fragrance greeted her nostrils. Drooling eyes feasted the mountain of chicken wings coated in thick rich-red flavoring.

But when she was about to munch one, the sounds of treachery pronouncing the female employee's betrayal played in her ears.

It was the siren of all the mafia families' long-time opponent, the police officers.

  1. Cash payment for protection or bribery; an envelope with money.
