Chapter 1: Raid

Nirl was a small village located near the south border of the empire. This border separated humans from demonic creatures.

Because the living conditions near the border were not only miserable but also dangerous, the taxes were greatly reduced. If not for that, there wouldn't be near as many as a thousand citizen.

Despite this, however, the village remained poor; poor not only economically, but also spiritually. There, the energy level was so low that despite all the efforts of the world, a person with the same talent could never equal another in another place.

It was even estimated that with equal talent, a gifted person coming from Nirl or a similar area would take at least twice the cultivation time of a person in the capital. And a person without talent would sometimes take 5 to 10 times longer.

The living conditions clearly weren't good, and that despite the empire's sustained and continuous efforts.

Thus, other than the villagers born inside, merchants or churchmen, or even a few officials, nobody would come visit the village. At best, soldiers would come to help from time to time, that is, if they were not overwhelmed.

The surroundings of Nirl weren't very detailed. To the north was a trade route that went farther into the empire toward the capital. To the east was the capital of the viscount, Cleppé. Further south was the border, teeming with demonic creatures . Finally, the west was occupied by a large forest where another threat lived: beasts.

But if the beasts were a danger, they weren't a plague like demonic creatures were. There was indeed what was called a raid. It was a sort of planned and grouped attack of demonic creatures that came up once or twice a month.

Despite its position well to the south, Nirl stayed just behind the front lines, so they didn't always have to

fight and didn't see that much raiding. Yet these raids were a nightmare for the small villages on the

border. The power of the demonic creatures was such that humans could ill afford to face them head-on, thus, humans typically stayed within the strongholds where they could continuously attack them from above the walls. As a result, these creatures sometimes crossed the defensive lines and attacked the villages.

And when the raid arrived, depending on the strength of the raid, a massacre would occur.

The stronghold of Terreneuve - South of the empire.

Behind the giant walls of ten meters that defended the stronghold, two soldiers could not believe their

eyes. In front of them was an invasion 2 to 3 times the size of a conventional raid.

Seeing this, they hurriedly sounded the alarm and warned the commander. The latter sent an emissary to

ask for help.

Observing the situation, the general in charge of the stronghold was anxious. If this small army of about

five hundred creatures contained the troops that should have attacked the other fronts, then at worst there

would be a few more casualties, but if every stronghold had to deal with this number of creatures, even

the soldiers of Cleppé would not be enough to prevent a general bloodbath.

A few hours later - Nirl

Nirl had been built on a small hillock, an advantageous position. In the village, apart from the church and

the watchtower with the tocsin, there were no buildings higher than five meters.

Having been warned in advance of the possible attack on their village, the inhabitants were obliged to

confront them. That's why all people who could fought could be seen in the village square. In all, there

were seven hundreds of them, gaining a numerical advantage. This advantage grew even greater if the

action of the strongholds was taken into account.

However, the battle was going to be difficult: most of the inhabitants were still without armor, with

weapons that sometimes consisted of a simple fork. Moreover, their cultivation was rather low.

In all, there were only about thirty soldiers, each of whom had real military equipment, with a steel sword

and leather protections to which thin steel slices had been added to the most sensitive parts. The major

part were members of Nirl's guards.

The rest were even less glorious, with a few hundred inhabitants possessing a weapon of war and

equipped with a helmet or more. Another hundred or so had only a weapon of war, and were generally

weaker. The whole was completed by citizens without weapons of war, who had to improvise.

''Ding Dong! Ding Dong! ''

The sound of the bell announcing the arrival of the enemy rang out. By this time, almost all the

inhabitants were stressed. The only ones who remained more or less calm were the elite, regularly training

by fighting the beasts.

But stressed or not, they all had to head for the makeshift fortifications, consisting mainly of wooden

fences and traps. There, however, even the elite could not help but shudder at the sight.

In front of them were over a hundred demonic creatures. They were all different, both in size and in

strength. Most of the beasts were smaller than a human being, about the size of a boar. The biggest ones

were about three meters tall, their power much greater. However, no one could have mistaken them for

beasts. All the demonic creatures had a special feature: purple skin.

The village chief, Alain, could not help but stare at both sides. After a few seconds, he sighed. He knew

the battle would be a massacre. Yet the power compelled him to stand his ground, and win a battle that

could only end with the death of one side.

'If only the humans were stronger, if only the angels and demons did not drag the humans into their

struggles. How many more will have to die?'

He shook his head. His internal questioning was meaningless, and was only going to gradually breaks

both his heart and his hopes. Having long participated in human counterattacks as Jean's squire, he could

guess.

Given the size, at least fifty would lose their lives.

He stepped forward to motivate the troops. With him stood Eloise, the leader of the Nirl defense brigade,

as well as Louis, administrator of the area.

''With us! Charge! ''

Another massacre took place.

Knowledge: The average power of the inhabitants of the village is between the militia and the guard. In

simple terms, the power ranks are as follows: New recruit --> Militia --> Guard --> Veteran --> Knight -->

Paladin.
