Chapter 41: chapter 41: unity

The students of U.A. high were quite unusual. That went without saying. After all, only the best of the best are allowed in this institution, and they always have their peculiarities. However, during my first week in this place, I noticed that the students of class 1-A, my classmates, were even more peculiar than I imagined.

These peculiarities were not of the individual sort. Everyone in this world had their quirks, literally. Everyone had some distinguishing factor that influenced how they behaved, or sometimes even vice versa. So too were my classmates. They all were unique in their own right, and that was not what I found strange. No, what I found peculiar was class 1-A had a rare sense of unity.

Throughout most of my school experience, it had been the norm that a class would split into multiple groups. Cliques, if you will. Each group was composed of a particular type of person, and contact between the groups was usually minimal, save for the occasional romance or bullying. It was not an ideal situation, but it was the norm, and it was a prime example of human behavior. However, it seemed class 1-A was fond of breaking expectations.

Because, save for two outliers who wanted nothing to do with the rest, the entirety of class 1-A was very united, strangely so. They stuck to each other like glue, displaying camaraderie and sociability I had rarely seen in any other group (which said a lot about the human race, but that's a discussion for another time). And this unity was present even before we went through a life-or-death ordeal, which strengthened everyone's bonds even more.

I had a theory about why this was the case. I suspected that this phenomenon was an intentional plan of the school itself. After all, every major event we experienced, be it the quirk assessment test by Mr. Aizawa or the battle trials of All Might, all challenged us not just individually but as a group. And it was a proven fact that hardships brought people together.

Whatever the case was, I was sure of one thing: their bond was infectious. Because for the first time since my rebirth, I found myself sitting amongst people that I did not find annoying in a heated discussion about the most stupid stuff.

"No, no, you're all wrong. I would crush every single one of you guys at any game you can think of, alright? You guys stand no chance."

Classes had just ended, and everyone was packing their bags and preparing to go home. I sat in my regular chair, surrounded by the earnest ginger Eijiro, the dumb-blonde Denki Kaminari, and the plain Hanta Sero. As this was still the first week we'd known each other, we had begun talking about hobbies and such, and as we were all (technically) teenage boys, the conversation naturally shifted towards video games.

"Come on, Akai! I know you're strong and all, but there's no way you could beat me." Denki almost seemed offended by my statement. "I barely do any schoolwork at all. All I do is play games. There's no way I could ever lose." He seemed strangely proud of his neglect of school duties.

I could only laugh. "Please! I've been playing video games before you guys were even born." A factual statement, but they did not know.

I leaned forward in my chair. "How about this. I just got the new Funstation 5, so how about you guys come over, and I'll show you why I'm better."

The others were ecstatic. "Woah, you have one? I thought they were super rare! How did you get it?" Hanta exclaimed.

I smiled proudly. "It's a long story. One of my neighbors works for the company that makes them. He almost got run over by a truck, but I saved him. He got me one as thanks."

Eijiro seemed moved. "You're saving lives even in your free time. So manly."

"That's how I roll, man. Balling on and off the court." I looked around the class. "Hey, Riki, do you want to join us?" I invited the giant Rikido Sato as well. The more, the merrier, after all, and it never hurt to build friendships with your classmates.

Riki looked sad. "Sorry guys, I can't come today."

I shrugged. "That's okay, maybe next time. Let's go, guys."

I stood up and walked towards the classroom door, accompanied by Eijiro, Denki, and Hanta. However, when I opened the door, I saw something unexpected.

A large crowd of students whom I had never met before stood in front of our classroom. They were all about our age, and they all had a serious look on their face.
