Chapter 7: Meowing insanity

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

The same system prompt rang inside Alan's mind as he was using his new use of Soul transfer through a beam format.

As he just used the method, he noticed it took a lot out of his mental strength and he would need to rest for a short while every five uses. It was also quite slow at guiding the ant souls because his beam was so small and faint in blue that it can only guide one ant per blast.

So for every five ant he guided underground, he would need a few minutes' rest, which slowed down his progress a lot.

But what could he do? He recently devised this move and wasn't used to expanding so much mental energy. Using his premade skills like soul transfer and soul eyes used little energy that even Alan wouldn't feel unless it was on constantly.

Thankfully, the more times Alan used his variation, the easier he found to use for the next time with less use of his energy. But the process was still slow even when he was improving in real time. It took him five hours to completely get rid of all the ants underground on the hill.

The day that was sunny and bright had dimmed down, followed by an orange sky as the sun disappeared for the night.

It was about to get dark for Alan as he laid down on the soft grass on the rough ground, checking out his job quota. If his skull allowed it, he would have had a massive smile while panting from complete exhaustion.

You must complete all daily tasks:

Guide the souls of 10,000 dead ants (8000/10,000)

Guide the souls of 100,000 baby larvae (0/100,000)

Guide the souls of 10,000 mosquitoes (1000/10000)

Reward: 10 experience points, 50 coins.

'2000 ants left...I'm so close.' Alan had so far spent nine hours and was very close to completing one of his daily quota.

15 hours remained until the next day…

Luckily, Alan didn't need to rest his body for too long and he guessed why. He was no longer human, a race that required food and water to constantly survive and had limited stamina unless one trained their body. As an undead, specifically a skeleton, who wasn't bound by the limits of mortal flesh, he no longer had to care about the daily necessities or his stamina consumptions.

Alan guessed he could probably walk forever if he truly wanted to. But he would never do such a thing and if he did, he would still take breaks because of his human-like mind, which would make him feel like he should take a break even if his body didn't

In fact, even now when he was lying down on the grass, his body never needed to actually rest, but Alan just felt like he needed to because it would be normal as a human.

Anyway, Alan continued to follow the compass and after an entire hour's walk, he saw the park's gate!

'Huh, I did a circle in the end...wow…' Alan tried to open the park gate but his hand phased through 'Ah right…' Realising his foolishness, he walked straight through the park gate and saw multiple cars passing through different cross roads.

Alan crossed the roads while following his compass, but only when he was confident that a car wouldn't hit him. He knew the car would pass him, but he didn't want to experience the feeling of being run over.

'Hm...this is interesting…' The compass was actually pointing towards a fairly decent sized house in a neighbourhood that seemed to be well off. The house looked to have three floors and had a well-sized pavement at the front of it with a mechanical gate locking it away from intruders.

Well, the obstacle posed no trouble for Alan as he walked past it and activated Souls eyes to check where the ants were hidden.

[Soul eyes activated.]

'...'

Anyway, Alan saw a few ants inside the house but also saw a cat inside chilling on the couch, emitting a grey aura.

'I hope it doesn't mind me invading its house.' When Alan was at the hill, he noticed the birds and a few other insect souls were quite aware of him and would actually back away or watch his every movement, which made Alan feel uncomfortable. But it made him realise the souls were still conscious and had their own thoughts, as if they were alive.

Alan phased through the door and entered the interior of the nice-looking house. The house interior had stairs leading up to the right of the door and had many rooms on the left side and ride.

Alan ignored it all as he lived in a much grander house in his old life, so he felt the house wouldn't have anything to actually impress him.

'Time to guide those ants.' He thought, but before he could walk to them, the cat soul came out of the living room and went near Alan while meowing in an alert stance.

'Luckily, there is no one inside the house right now.' Alan ignored the cat and continued finding the ants.

However, nothing is ever easy. The cat had the audacity to jump on Alan's face and scratch him!

"URGH!" Alan screamed from shock for the first time as a Grim Reaper.

Though the cat couldn't damage him since he was made of bones, it still felt very unpleasant, so Alan grabbed the cat on the back and held him.

The cat was moving wildly while Alan was holding him with one hand, but it seemed Alan was much stronger than the cat, so it was still trapped.

"Meow!" It yelped while trying to scratch Alan's face again.

'This is quite the predicament…' Alan sighed.

"Listen, cat, I'm not here to do anything. I will take the ants and leave, okay?" Alan would have never thought in his entire life would he be negotiating with a cat to stop disturbing him during his brief visit.

"Meow!" The cat was clearly having none of it.

"Please..it's just-"

"MEOW!"

"I will leave quick-"

"MEOW!"

'Why do you want to make my life harder!' Alan wanted to cry.
