Very straightforward, but effective. I'm happy to say that the overall pacing and the character of Alan is implemented well. It's refreshing to see a protagonist who does indeed have a tragedy of his own but it doesn't revolve him being another bullied orphan going on a power fantasy. Admittedly the plot truly happens after 2 or 3 chapters (the main one), which felt as fast as a bullet train, but at least there's some interesting hook to the first chapter, and also a reasonable amount of buildup to understand the overall situation of what is going on. Although power is the case of this novel here, I appreciate the author's efforts at Alan trying to get used to this new life from level 1 (literally speaking). Hopefully we do get to see a more reasonable buildup of his character, physically and mentally. I can't say much for Alan but I will say his overall character is believable. Too many protagonists take their new status for granted once they die or something along those lines, Alan doesn't. He acts like what a realistic person would: react in surprise and horror (but not too much and not overly swearing). I do like to see more of the world though, sure we saw Alan in his initial phase prior to him being a Reaper, but hopefully as the story goes on, we get to see more instances of the world this book is set in. So far so good. Keep on writing.

Follow Alan on his new job as a budding grim reaper! Collecting souls of all creatures great and small while getting confused and screwed over at times by other entities including his big boss Death. I like the way death itself as a job, becoming a tad bureaucratic with tech!
