Chapter 20: Radioactive City

"Just my luck…"

Alan was currently in a dead city, filled with rubble and overgrown plants and vines around the buildings.

Nature had taken over the area, and it made Alan feel a lot of dread.

Yes, Alan was currently at Chernobyl, the radioactive city.

(Before his teleportation)

[What Larvae are you looking for?]

The system gave a message to Alan, making him feel stuck.

'Uh… do you have any recommendations?]

Though Alan was quite knowledgeable in many things regarding as a doctor, he wasn't exactly the biggest insect enthusiast.

[System recommends Maggots, there are big bundles of them.]

'Okay, where are maggots located?]

[Dead bodies]

'…'

Alan wanted to punch the holographic scene before his eyes, but knew it was pointless. He believed that the system had its own consciousness because sometimes it's the most helpful tool he had and other times it was completely useless, making him wonder why they bother to give Reapers such a thing!

'Then why haven't I seen a single maggot?'

[You were not around dead bodies]

Alan's brain turned its gears 'Would a hospital work then? No… they wouldn't leave bodies to decompose for that long…'

Alan was trying to figure a place with dead bodies that would have maggots infesting them. However, he also needed the maggots to have died off to actually collect them, finding them to be more difficult than he originally thought.

'System, please help me out here. I have one shot at this skill, please recommend a place to teleport.'

Alan tried to beg the system for its help, hoping that it would take pity on him.

'This is new' Alan patiently waited for the system to understand his request 'It seems even the system needs time to answer more personal questions'

[Teleport to Ukraine]

When Alan saw the system message, he didn't feel happy for some reason. It was strange, he felt a sudden chill by his spine and an ominous feeling overwhelmed him.

'This feels strange…' Alan didn't know why, but he did not like the system's suggestion.

However, he shook his head 'What's wrong with me? I'm undead, what's the worst that could happen. I can't die by ordinary people!' Shaking off his bad feeling, Alan activated his country teleportation skill.

[Select your destination]

'Ukraine'

[Confirming your destination]

[You are eligible to teleport to Ukraine]

[Teleporting to a random location]

[Teleporting to Chernobyl]

'Uh what!!??? Stop stop stop! System cancel!!!' Alan lost his mind when he saw his destination and tried to cancel his skill.

[Teleporting Now]

But it was too late and with a blue flash, Alan's surroundings had completely changed to a deserted and destroyed city.

Alan felt extremely uncomfortable being in the area, but he didn't know why.

'What's wrong with this place…'

Though he didn't like his location, he tried to think positively.

'There must be a lot of dead larvae souls here… there has to be, right?' Alan activated soul's eyes.

[Soul eyes activated]

When his skill activated, Alan felt nauseous and dizzy , if he could he would have puked immediately.

His surroundings turned much darker. He could see some faint black fog around him that made him feel sick.

'What the hell is this!' Alan did not know why this area felt so corrupted.

Alan quickly turned off his skill, which lessened the burden he faced but not completely. He still felt sick being in this area, but it wasn't as bad anymore.

Alan brought out his compass and its pointer spun around like crazy 'eh? They are here?' Alan activated soul transfer without using soul's eyes.

He just did not want to see that dark and corrupt city.

[Congratulations! You have guided 1 dead larvae]

[Congratulations! You have guided 2 dead larvae]

[Congratulations! You have guided 3 dead larvae]

…..

[Congratulations! You have guided 1000 dead larvae]

Near instantly, Alan felt his head ring intensely as more than a thousand prompts shot in his mind.

"URGH!" He stopped his skill and held his head in pain 'There were that many from one beam shot!?' Taking a few seconds to collect his breath, Alan slowly raised his two hands around him shakily.

Even though he did not want to, Alan had to use his skill to take care of the surrounding larvae.

'This is going to hurt…' Alan took a breath and activated Soul transfer.

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

His head hurt by the bombardment of the system's notifications, making him want to stop using his skill again but Alan persevered, he had little time to waste.

Two hours passed as Alan stood in the same position, spinning around as his beams decimated the ground around him

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

Thousands upon thousands of system prompts rang throughout his mind in a mere instant that it felt like Alan was torturing himself.

The only time he would take a break was when he ran out of energy to produce his soul transfer beam. But other than that, he did not stop and gritted his teeth as he continued to guide the thousands of Larvae.

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

Alan couldn't even complain or think of any words as it just placed more pressure on his mind. All he heard was the system's notification prompts.

Eventually, his surroundings had no more larvae, or at least where his beams reached, so Alan had to walk forward while using his skill, as it seemed there were larvae everywhere.

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

[Congratulations! You have guided…]

Finally, after another two hours, Alan received his favourite system prompt.

[Congratulations! You have guided 100,000 dead larvae souls!]

[Congratulations! You have completed one of your daily tasks!]

[Congratulations! You have completed all your daily quotas!]

[First time completion of daily quota!]

[Rewarded 10 experience points and 50 coins]

[First time completion bonus rewards]

[Extra 10 experience points and 50 coins awarded]

[Soul eyes activated]

Alan wanted to cheer, but he didn't have a chance.

Before he could celebrate, his soul eyes activated without his will, and the dark nauseous surrounding returned.

'Wha-' Alan couldn't finish his thought as he saw something in the distance.

*Click*

Around the corner of a building, Alan saw a figure covered in darkness. It was difficult to see what was underneath the darkness exuded from it but Alan could make out a human shape except that it looked a little larger and feral.

It felt like a beast, yet had the figure of a human, some sort of hybrid. It turned towards Alan, only its bright white pupils were visible in the darkness as Alan felt petrified by its look.

'S-System, W-W-what i-is t-that' Alan could not think straight as his breathing sped up.

[Run]
