Chapter 46: First mission

(FIRST-PERSON POV) from now on.

————

After the quick introductions, we all went back to our rooms.

When I opened the door to mine, I went back to my bed and lay down. I heard the bathwater running, so I knew Ash was taking a bath.

"Argh."

With a pleased grunt, I stretched my limbs. I then closed my eyes and was about to fall asleep when the home phone rang.

*ring

"Ughh. Fucking phone."

I was pissed and annoyed, but I still managed to get out of my bed. I wobbled over to the phone on the table in the room's corner and answered.

"Hello. Johnathan speaking."

"This is the sergeant. We've given your squad a mission. Be ready and come to the lobby in five minutes."

Before I could even respond, the sergeant hung up.

With a sigh, I changed my clothes. I put on a tight black shirt that covered half of my neck. Black pants with patting near the knees. I then put on a black camo jacket.

I then put my black combat boots on before putting my deagle holster on my waist.

I normally put my deagle crossing each other behind me. Not just for the 'cool' effect but because it was what I was comfortable with.

Now that I was changed and ready, I walked into the washroom and told Ash I was leaving.

After a quick goodbye, I left for the lobby.

Once I got there, I saw my squad members. After a quick greeting, we noticed the sergeant was walking towards us.

"Follow me to my office."

We followed him into his office and waited for him to sit down.

"The mission is to clear this area. We had men there, but they went MIA. We've had no response from them for days. I need you to clear out the area and hold it down until reinforcements get there. Here."

He finished by giving us a folder and a walkie-talkie.

"Set out once you guys are ready. Fill up on ammo and weapons. Also, take the car."

We nodded and left the office.

"Now then. Let's go stack up on ammo and weapons. After we're done that, let's set off."

Since no one argued against my plan, we went to the armory.

We packed a bag full of ammo for guns like the AR 15, grenades, flash grenades, and ammo for the deagles I carried. I also took two knives and their holsters and strapped the knives on my thighs.

We then all took an AR and left the armory. Then, the four of us took the key from the sergeant's office and set off.

——

The four of us were in the car running over zombies.

Bruce was driving, and I was in the passenger seat. Angela and Daniela sat in the back.

While driving and running over zombies, I looked over the mission. I opened the folder we got and read the contents for the second time.

'It's supposed to be a warehouse. But what's so special about it? The sergeant didn't say anything.'

I didn't know what they needed it for. But for them to want to take it back so badly meant that it was important.

'Well, I'll find out, eventually.'

I then looked into the mirror and saw tens of zombies chasing us. They were all second and third tiers. Which meant they wouldn't die from being run over by a small car like the one we were using.

"It'll be a problem if they follow us all the way there."

I nodded at Daniela's words and took out a grenade. Better safe than sorry.

I yanked the pin out and released the grenade. Peeking my head out the window, I watched as the bomb fell to the ground exploded as soon as the zombies were in its radius.

'The god of luck loves me.'

The zombies exploded and died there and then. 'Sucks that I can't search for their cores.'

I haven't eaten a single crystal for a while. And I honestly missed getting stronger with them. They were just too useful to not eat.

We continued driving and before we knew it; we were stopped in front of three Tier 3 zombies. They were massive and had blue veins popping from their body.

'They look pretty cool. No matter how ugly they are.'

The street we were on was too narrow to swerve past them. And we couldn't run them over with such a weak car.

So, since I was getting bored, I got out.

I placed my AR down and walked out. "Be back quick."

I heard my squad mate say. "Don't worry Bruce. It'll be over quickly."

I took out the two deagles from behind and covered the barrel with a little bit of mana. The zombies feeling threatened dashed towards me.

With a smile, I aimed at their heads and let it fire.

*plop

*plop

The two zombies fell on the ground with their heads nowhere to be found.

I then looked at the more intelligent zombie who stayed back. "You're a smart one, huh?"

The zombie got agitated and rushed at me like the previous ones.

"Never mind."

I pointed one of my deagles at his head and fired it. The bullet was enhanced with a small amount of mana but even then. It's head exploded like a watermelon and fell over.

After they were dead, I searched their bodies for crystals.

"Useless shits."

None had any. So, with an angry stomp, I walked back to the car.

While we were driving and continued to make our way to the destination, I meditated and recovered the small amount of mana I lost.

The factory was still over forty minutes away. So, I took a nap. I closed my eyes and let my mind wander off.

"Wake up. We're in trouble."

"Argh. What?"

I was a terrible morning person and hated being woken up.

"Look."

I looked up and saw ten zombies in our way. Four Tier 3 ones and six tier 2's. the last one was a tier 1. So it didn't concern us.

"Fine. Let's go."

With a sigh, I got out of the car with my AR in hand. The other followed my lead.

"I'll take the Tier 3 zombies. You guys kill the tier 2 and 1s."

The other hummed in agreement.

My targets were close together. So, not wanting to waste time, I covered my legs and barrel in mana and stopped time.

I drew mana out from the core, covering the world grey.

I dashed between the three and stopped my time stop.

Letting my bullets fly, I killed all three in one moment.

The three of my squad members looked at me as the zombies' heads popped one after the other. With their mouths open, I walked back to them. The other zombies tried attacking me, but with my legs still enhanced, I dodged them with ease.

"Your turn."

The three got out of their stupor and rushed at the zombies.

I could've killed them all, but I didn't want to carry my squad. That would leave them depending on me too much. Which could eventually kill them.

Having them grow alongside me would keep not only them but me alive and safe.
