Chapter 36: MEET THE GREEK GOD'S
Everyone turned to look at Kirk who seemed to have taken the whole 'Egyptian gods are the most famous' thing quite personally. He had spoken with such passion that no one had dared to call him out on it. "The greek gods are waay more interesting than anything you've heard today. Let me water down their story for you. The first thing you need to know is that the greek gods are numerous. Far more than Egyptian,hindu or Chinese gods. The gods just loved humans. And because they looked like humans themselves,they were always coming here and creating families with mortals hence the creation of all these gods. The greek gods are also called the olympian gods since it was believed they lived on the very top of mount olympus." Kirk informed his audience.
"The most known of these gods though are the oldest and strongest 12. These were the ones who had taught humans everything. From agriculture to architecture and whatever. What people seem to forget though is that these twelve main gods were not the original gods of the greeks. The original gods whose names I don't remember were the ones who made this world and everything in it. These gods though were tyrants and had been overthrown by their children, the 12 olympian gods. These war that led to the overthrow of the previous gods who were called 'Titans' had been led by Zeus,the eldest of the Titan's children who had fought and freed the remaining of his siblings from his mad truant father. This is where Zeus' position as the king of the olympian gods had come from.", Kirk explained like a lecturer."There were many gods like I said,but the most revered and powerful were the top twelve,namely; Zeus,Hera,Demeter,Apollo, Artemis, Athena, Hephaestus,Hermes..." "Huh?" Ethan asked with wide eyes and a madly beating heart. "What is it?", Kirk asked Ethan. "What name did you just mention?" Ethan asked again. Even though he had heard the name quite clearly,he wanted to be sure he hadn't misheard. "I said Hermes. The messenger god." Kirk answered. Ethan just nodded for him to continue with his speech. 'So he is a greek god then. He really didn't lie when he said he was a god. That means everything he said about great evil is true. Can I really help this world like he thinks?', Ethan asked himself. "And poseidon." Ethan heard Kirk say. He had spaced out and missed the names of the last few gods.
"Now let's get on to their powers,shall we?", Kirk asked, greatly enjoying the looks of fascination on his friends faces. "Please do.", Ethan prompted him along with a few others. "Let's start with Zeus. Zeus was the god of the sky with the power of lightening. He had great physical strength as well, more than the other gods and was hailed as the strongest of the Olympians. Zeus had many many children since he was something of a man hoe. Always cheating on his wife, the goddess Hera." Kirk started. "Hera was Zeus's wife and a strong female who guarded the marriage of others. She was the only known person who could dare to oppose him on mount olympus. Not much is known about Hera though so let's go to the goddess Demeter. This was the goddess of harvest in ancient greek. She is believed to have thought mankind everything about farming and has the power to control plants. She's said to have once caused a famine with her sorrow when her daughter, Persephone had been abducted by Hades and sent to the underworld." Kirk paused to catch his breath before continuing.
"The next god is Artemis. She was the goddess of the hunt and the protector of young girls and animals. Her brother was the god Apollo. Apollo,the twin brother of Artemis was the god of the sun, healing and prophecy. He was also a great musician who was well known for his famous lyre." Kirk said. "What the fuck is a lyre?", Joseph questioned. "Yh,what the fuck is a lyre?" John also asked. "It's like a harp and was used the way a harp was. Don't ask me what a harp is, all I know is it was a musical instrument.", Kirk said in slight annoyance. Nobody asked him anything though. "Next is the goddess Aphrodite. She was the goddess of love and was known to be the most beautiful woman among mortals and immortals alike. She was known to have the power to inspire love in anyone, allowing her to control them.next up Is Ares. Ares was the god of war and blood-lust. Ares was a war lover and thus didn't have many followers except in Sparta where he was greatly revered. Maybe because the spartans themselves loved war. The next god is Hephaestus. This god is said to be lame and not as pretty as the others. He was the god of fire and craftsmanship. Hephaestus was said to be able to build anything. The next God is Hermes.", Kirk turned to look at Ethan who was sitting straight and listening with all his body. Kirk wondered why he was so interested in this particular god. Maybe it's a love at first sound thing. Kirk thought with an inward chuckle.
"Hermes was the messenger god who carried messages to mortals from the gods. He also played this role between the gods. He was also the god of wealth,thieves,trade and travellers. Hermes was said to be the fastest of the gods, which would explain why he was their messenger. The next god is the goddess Athena. She was the goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare. I like to think of her as the wiser and female version of Ares. The next and final god is Dionysus. Dionysus was the god of Viticulture and wine making. He was initially a demi-god but had won the hearts of the other gods and he had been made an elder god. That is the list of the twelve major olympian gods. Now let's talk about the great opposer. The god of the underworld who used to be among the twelve main olympian gods unt he was made lord of the underworld. Hades...." RIIIIIIINGGGGGGG!!!! The school boy went off, signalling the end of lunch. "Shit!!!", Ethan cussed loudly. Why did the bell have to go off now of all times?, He asked himself.
"Hey chill man. We could always continue next time.", John patted Ethan on the back. "Yh, or you could research on the matter yourself." Francis told him. "But if it comes to that. Be sure to research the real gods of these world. The Egyptian gods. Not some gods with a daddy issue.", Francis said pointedly at Kirk. "At least their history is still known and quite rich, unlike your gods whose history is completely destroyed except for their paintings and sculptures. Just what can you learn from paintings and sculptures?" Kirk shot back. "That is because they're Soo old all their history has been lost to time. Their language was also coded so it took time to learn stuff.", Francis defended himself. The two boys continued like this from the cafeteria,all the way to class.
Ethan though was lost in his thoughts as usual. Now he had the information Hermes had asked him to research. He couldn't wait to get to detention so that he could ask Hermes some real questions and also see what he was going to be taught today after school.
