Chapter 21: Chapter 21 Late Night

Metropolis, near midnight.

It is now customary that people have counted the points where sheep sink into their dreams, and even in a brightly lit city like Metropolis, not many people are still roaming the streets. The street fell into a deep sleep, the street lamps along the road released dim yellow lights alone, the traffic lights flickered lonely, and the entire street was seen from a distance for a long time without a car passing by.

Of course, this is also because the street is far away from the main road and is not empty. A man in a wrinkled jacket was sitting on a bench under the dim light, with a cigarette in the corner of his mouth. The shadow and the bar stretched very long on the ground.

When he threw an unknown number of cigarette butts into the trash can, Mr ReyMrds appeared in the first corner ahead. Charles Reynolds was wearing his brown trench coat, his high collar covering almost half his face. He walked quickly to the lighted area and sat on the back of the bench, back to back, with the man in the jacket.

"It's late for you today." The man said and took out a khaki file bag from his arms. "Everything you want is here."

Mr Reynolds took it from his shoulder, undid the coils going around the file bag, took out a few, checked them, and seemed to confirm that it was what he wanted. He re-tied the document bag, handed the banknotes to the man, and stood up to leave without saying a word.

"Charles." The man suddenly stopped him. Mr Reynolds stopped, turned his head halfway, and seemed to signal with his eyes that he had something to say.

The man considered for a moment and said: "I know that business is business, but now that the business is over, I still want to remind you from the perspective of a friend. After all, we have been working together for so long - I will provide you with tips; you can use Pen to bash the guy you don't like."

Mr Reynolds folded his arms and waited for him to continue.

"It's not that I'm not happy you've come back to work with me because it seems like a long time since our last business. But I think you should think about it. What you're looking into now is very dangerous, and it involves Those people... my gut tells me they're not easy. I heard about the plane crash. Do you think it's just a coincidence?"

Mr Reynolds was silent. He didn't answer, just put the document bag in his arms, walked out of the light field of the street lamp without a word, and walked towards the open end of the street.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk back from here, and in the middle of the night, I can't even see the shadow of a taxi. Mr Reynolds was walking along the inner sidewalk when the phone in his coat pocket suddenly rang, and the melody of an old song echoed loudly in the empty street.

It was Mrs Reynolds. "Hey, where are you? Why haven't you been back?"

"I, uh... have something out there."

"Jay hasn't come back yet," said Mrs Reynolds worriedly. "I can't help but be a little worried."

"Haha, don't worry, he's a big kid, and you know what he can do." Mr Reynolds laughed, "and it's rare for him to have such an interest, so let him go."

"I know. I... can't help but worry."

"That's not necessary. You know he can't be bound by us forever, he's different, and one day he'll fly away from the lair we've built for him, and you'll have to get used to it," said Mr Reynolds lightly. Not to mention, I'm on my way, and I'll be back soon."

He hung up the phone, put it in his pocket, and stopped suddenly when he raised his head.

Just beside the street lamp, less than five steps away from him, a man with a face carved like a knife was leaning against the lamp post. He wore a formal black suit and stepped on bright leather shoes, the uppers of which shone under the reflection of the light, reminiscent of the traditional image of a spy.

Mr Reynolds instinctively realised that something was wrong. He subconsciously took two steps back and turned around, only to find that the path behind him was also blocked by a man dressed in black, just like the guy in front of him. The two formed a siege situation one after the other, like a jackal blocking its prey.

Metropolis, two in the morning.

Although the Reynolds never set a gate time for Jay, it was rare that he had not been home by this point over the years, mainly because he had never found such a good company before.

Carla is an impeccable companion, not just because the two of them are likely the only two endangered species left in the universe. She maintains an interest in almost everything as if the whole world is new to her, and she shares Jay's near-infinite energy—thanks to the generous gift of the sun's rays.

They went to the private room to sing a song for a while, and both found out that the other was exceptionally talented in music. Then they flew around the metropolis in the dark for half a week and finally sat back under the big golden ball of the Daily Planet to chat. Jay told her about the little things in his life since being adopted by the Reynolds and his wife, and Kara always listened with enthusiasm and giggled, no matter how trivial. But her story is far more exciting. She tells Jay how she came to Earth, met her cousin Superman, and worked with him again super-criminal, and how There are various intersections with other heroes of the Justice League. Jay felt like her story was almost endless as if every page of her life was filled with beautiful chapters that wouldn't last three days or nights.

She said that when she first came to Earth, she lost control of her heat vision in the Batcave and accidentally blew up Batman's priceless bat computer. Batman was pretty pissed, but at the time, Superman was very generous and said it could be on his account.==

"Superman said that?" Jay asked unexpectedly. "And then what? He ended up buying a new one for Batman?"

"No, I owe it." Kara recalled the scene, still smiling from ear to ear, "It's been seven or eight years since I owe it, and with Clark's salary, I don't think he will be able to pay it back in his lifetime. ."

Jay couldn't help laughing too, and the cheerful laughter of the two echoed lightly in the vast night sky.

"I had only just arrived on Earth at the time, and I was a little girl who didn't even speak the language of Earth. Carl took care of me...in every way."

Carla said she couldn't help but feel sad again. Jay knew she was missing his cousin, who was no longer there and didn't know what to say, so he kept silent.

"Okay." She shook off the momentary displeasure and said, "It's not too early; I should almost go back and prepare what Ms Grant explained, lest she gets mad at me again tomorrow. God, I'm not even afraid of Intercontinental. The missile hit the head, but my scalp tingles just thinking about how Ms Grant is pissed."

"Haha, understandable."

"You should also go back earlier, don't let your parents worry too much." She stood up, floated in the air, and said, "It's a pleasure to chat with you."

"Me too," Jay said, suddenly remembering something and asking, "Are you going back to Cassino?"

"Yeah." Kara nodded, "Ketko's private jet should come and pick us up tomorrow night."

"So...we'll meet again later, right?"

Carla chuckled. "I can come anytime if the weekend is okay. Look, Nassino and the Met aren't that far off."

"Aha, that's right, it's not that far."

Saying goodbye to Kara, Jay is in a good mood, like even the sun is shining brighter than ever... well, maybe it's moonlight because it's still midnight, but it says something about him being in an Excited mood.

Until Mrs Reynolds called.

Jay picks up the phone: "Hello? Sorry, Mom, I'm a little too late today, but I'm getting ready to return now. You...wait, what? Dad's missing!? "
