Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Making Matters Worse

“Nevermind. It’s not important,” I say, tearing off a piece of baguette and slathering butter on it.

It’s not garlic bread, but it certainly is fresh.

“Sorry, Mackie. I’ll put my phone on silent. What’s up?” The handsome alpha sighs and flips his phone down on the table.

“D’Angelo catching us here could be a big deal, Donovan,” I hiss, making sure my voice is too low to be heard over the din of the restaurant by D’Angelo.

“Mackie, we aren’t doing anything wrong. We are two consenting adults getting dinner together. You’re not going to get any favoritism from me, and once things proceed you won’t even have to work at CBC, much less work at all.” Donovan takes a sip of his wine and I pause reaching for mine.

“What does that mean? ‘Once things proceed’?” I lean forward while Donovan takes the last snail from the tray and pops it into his mouth.

He just made eating bugs look like a luxury fragrance commercial.
