"Hello."

Standing before her was a man in a rumpled navy blue coat, off-white breeches, and black leather boots. In a way, he filled the doorway like an overstuffed sausage bursting out of its casing, but that wasn't the quality that made Evelina gasp, air constricting in her throat. It was the way his face was hard, the tall dark hat shielding, but not completely, the sinister glint in his eyes. "Who are you?"

"I'm here with a package for you," he replied, and Evelina released the air she'd been holding in her lungs for the past minute.

Her hands flew up to her hips, watching as he moved aside and carefully picked up a metal box to give it to her. "I was instructed not to give this to anyone but you."
