"It is said that the goddesses of the sun and moon created Avandula as a gift to the spirit-shifters. These were no ordinary shifters; they didn't get their powers from the gods, but from the wild animals who dwelled within their villages. Not as hunters, but protectors.
But everyone always wondered what they could possibly be protecting. It couldn't have been the villages, so remote and secret that the people needed the animals' guidance to travel between each one.
The lions were protecting the land itself as well as the twins born within the heart of the village. The balance between light and dark. Of good and evil. Of courage and fear. Of war and peace.
Twins weren't rare within the villages, each given a spirit-cub to grow with. It was the rawness of their powers when together that was rare. The power of creation and destruction. Each set of twins possessed unique gifts. Some controlled the elements, others could alter the emotions of those around them. Some could travel through the air, others through time itself. Some could create illusions so powerful that they could alter appearance, others could heal wounds so brutal that no scar remained.
Only together could they master all the gifts given to them. The most powerful and gifted could control everything, including life and death.
But if tainted by the evils and darkness of the world... war and famine will spread through each of the villages, killing off the spirit-shifters one by one until they all extinct. Destroying the world with them."
That was the last story my mother told my brother and I about our ancestors before she was killed. Killed by the men who now showcase us like pets. Our gifts are a mere tool created for their entertainment.
This is the story of how I became queen, not just to the people of Avandula, but the queen of all mortals and immortals alike within my world.
