Chapter 2: A Scene From Movies
Earlier before setting out to buy some foods, Ren an average university student is playing cards with his friends in the small room that they rented in the boardinghouse. After playing for a while he got bored.
"Hah... I'm going to take a break." Ren sighed out of boredom and picked up a book from inside his backpack.
"Yeah sure, go do that coward." Zake answered with a taunting voice. "I'm not a coward, your dares are just too boring." Ren replied smugly. "What? You're the one who's boring, not finishing our game." Zake tried to mock Ren once again, but this time Ren just ignored him saying. "Yeah, yeah."
Ren then squatted in a corner of the room and started reading a novel he just got from the nearby book-rental shop. After reading for quite some time, Jinx suddenly called him.
"Hey Ren, go to the store and buy us some midnight snacks will you. Here is some money, use it." Jinx showed him 3 five hundred peso bills. "Just fifteen hundred (1,500)? Make it two thousand so we can have more." Ren said expectantly.
"We'll use it for going out tomorrow though? After getting back home we'll form a party and play with our friends." Jinx answered. Jay then added. "And besides, the losers of this game will confess their love to their crushes."
The other two were dumbfounded for a while and then roared at the same time. "The heck?!" Zake continued. "You're just saying that because you already have a girlfriend!" Jinx then added. "Yeah, that's right. That's so unfair!"
"So what if it's unfair, I'm winning the game anyway." Jay laughed complacently. Ren also laughed and said. "Alright, I'm definitely going to watch them get dumped. That's a promise!"
This group of best friends have been together since childhood and doesn't back down from any challenges they give each other. So he was really looking forward to seeing his friends get drunk and cry rivers for getting dumped or happily brag to them their new girlfriends. Either way, just thinking about it made his insides scream with joy.
"Are you courting death, Ren?" Zake said with a deep voice. Jinx pondered for a few seconds and then said. "Hmm… That's a pretty nice challenge, I was actually thinking of confessing for a while now."
Jay suddenly thought of something and said.
"Now that you mention it, if you both succeed in this challenge only Ren would be a lone wolf. Ahaha." Zake's eyes suddenly lit as he said mockingly. "Yeah, you're right. Each of us will have a girlfriend except for Ren."
"Then good luck about that, because I'll pray only for your failure Zake. Ahaha!" Ren said while grinning evilly.
Zake felt a chill run down his spine and then shouted. "No, don't do that! We're friends right? You should be supporting your friend!" Ren ignored him and put down the book he was reading, saying. "I'm going to borrow this umbrella then."
"Don't! Hey, put that back. That's my girlfriend's!" Jay angrily glared at him. "It's raining cats and dogs outside. And the foods will get soaked if I don't use one." Ren said with a grin.
"Then just use yours!" Jay sneered. "What? But I want to use the umbrella of a cute girl." Ren said, and without waiting for an answer he opened the door.
After getting outside, he opened the umbrella and closed the door of their small room. This room is small from the outside, but surprisingly enough; the four of them could fit in it and still have some space to spare.
He headed out to the shop. It was late at night, so there were not that many shops that were still open at this hour. He arrived at the nearby 24/7 convenience store. After buying what he wanted, he got out of the shop with two bags full of stuff that he bought. In the first bag, were the steaming hot goods that were microwaved in the shop. As for the other bag, it was for their daily necessities and things that he personally wanted to buy.
Just as he was walking down the lonely streets, where lights from passing vehicles would flicker as they come and go, carrying two bags in one hand and the umbrella in the other.
*Boom* He felt the earth trembling followed by a loud thud, as if something like a meteorite had hit the ground. "What was that?!" he exclaimed.
The shaking lasted for a minute. Ren released a sigh of relief. "Haa… These earthquakes have been coming a lot these days." At least it was just around magnitude 3, he thought to himself. He doesn't need to worry about his friends if it was just this strong.
He started to move forward so as to avoid making his friends worry about him. But just as he took a step forward, he saw a figure from the corner of his eyes and started to look in that direction.
What he saw made him stop in his tracks and breathe in a mouthful of cold air. The figure in front of him was simply too perfect that it felt like as if she came right out of the painting.
Anyone seeing this scene would think that it came straight out of a princess movie, where the princess is squatting down with tears coming out of her eyes as she glanced at the prince charming that was standing there looking at her from afar.
