Chapter 3: Dinner-time

The first day was more or less introduction: we were given a schedule for our class, shown meditation chambers, dojos, workshops, library, cafeteria, training ground, and introduced to teachers. Once it was over the class have dispersed. I knew that Nie Li would be going to the market to start his big plan, while I had returned to the library and borrowed a few introductory books about medicine, alchemy, inscription, and demonic beasts sensitive to the Sun and Moon.

On my way back home, I saw that 'fake Shikamaru' (from Nie Li's gang of commoners) haggling with a common weapon store manager. Once I got home and greeted Yue'er.

"Yue'er, I'm home!" - I called out upon entering the yard.

"Welcome home, young master." - she replied with a warm smile and even her ugly scar couldn't diminish her brilliance.

"Ahh, you are a cure for my strained nerves." - I complimented, earning a giggle from her.

"Dinner will be ready in an hour. Or do you want something right now?" - she asked.

"No nothing special, I'll be studying books in my room." - with that said, I got to my room and began reading.

To be honest, these introductory books were shit! Overly complicated languages with undefined terms and 3 to 4 references to other books by the same author on each page. And it was a common feature for all of these books. No wonder, brother Fei considered learning from books a waste of his time. This system was absolutely beneficial for scholars and a huge toll on the rest of the people. It was an absolutely disastrous system keeping humanity dumb and weak. As a proper scholar, I took notes, there were between a page and page-and-half of the information per book, with another half a page dedicated to undefined terms. I think that I got as much as I did only because of my experience from reading Xianxia novels using Google translate. By the end of an hour, I earned a small headache.

The dinner was a Chinese cuisine infused with fantasy. I told Yue to sit at the table and eat along with me. Old Shen Yue did it a few times in the past when he got tired of a master-servant formality, so intrinsic to this family.

"Yue'er do you know how to cultivate?" - It was a long shot.

"No, young master, house servants aren't taught it." - she replied calmly.

"I will teach you tonight." - the girl was my only ally now.

"Thank you, thankyou, thankyou master" - she replied bowing her head.

"Let us see if you even have a talent for it. Even lord Ye Mo was a commoner once." - I ended-up patting her head.

Dinner took around half an hour, but it was enough to relax and clear my head. I've gone back to my room and told her to come in half an hour. I needed time to find my soul-attribute and see how it would affect my cultivation.

Degradation of knowledge is so common and systemic in Xianxia, that it should have some sort of simple and convenient mechanics.
