Chapter 3: New life

Ade closed her eyes in death as he felt the burns consume her skin when all of a sudden another heat attacked her from within, overshadowing the external pain. Her eyesight blurred, but not because tears were welling up. Everything became fuzzy; then she heard a childish voice in the distance.

'Life is precious, don't waste my gift'

Alert she scanned her surrounding but saw nothing at all. Her consciousness was floating through an empty space filled with a thick static. Throughout the inky space her heartbeats pounded loudly, echoing in her ears, alongside fading pleas for help.

The feeling in her body drained away until finally all was black.

With a gasp she awoke, startling the sleeping machines. The sounds of running footsteps echoed in the narrow corridor. Images were flashing like a movie in her head. With great reluctance she pried her eyes open only to be blinded by the bright light above her. She saw various silhouettes moving her with urgency. But the one who caught her attention was the fourteen year old boy who kept holding her hands and crying not minding his red puffy eyes and the snot running down his nose. Despite the dishelved appearance of the boy the only she think of was how cute he looked with is white shirt dyed in blood. And then the light faded from her eyes.

She laid there quietly, keeping her eyes closed, matching her breaths to the beeping of the machines that surrounded the bed, the only indications of her heartbeat, her existence. Her legs felt numb. Curiosity slowly pried open her swollen eyes to meet a dismal view of a magnolia colored hospital room, the door a navy blue. Ade slid her eyes sideways, surveying her surroundings when she saw the same fourteen year old boy holding her hands with his head on her bead.

Short, but plenty deep cuts ran along her arm.

The smell of disinfectant awakened memories long forgotten, echos of those long ago hospital visits jarred her mind. Suddenly being forced to swim once more in the tide waters of the past, she sat upright immediately realizing something, 'why are my hands white'

Raising the hem of her hospital gown she saw her snow white legs. In horror, she stood up and ran into the bathroom, waking up the boy in the process.

A loud scream resounded from the bathroom, Ade was completely horrified with what she saw in the mirror. It was a life like mannequin was staring back at her, thin, white and her baby pink lips wide open. Her soft, ivory shoulders were exposed and her midnight curls fell down her back. Her blue eyes shone like twin moons. Ade suddenly came to a realization. She was the girl in her dream, 'Alexandra Lin'.

She had lots of questions that needed answers like 'how the f**k did she become white'

Her weak legs buckled underneath her.

'Such a fragile body' she sneered in her heart. She dragged her weak feet towards the toilet bowl and sat on the lid while trying to gather every possible info of her predicament.

This body belongs to Alexandra Lin the hidden heiress of the Lin family. She was sent abroad immediately after her birth for treatment because unlike her twin she was born with a hole in her heart. She suffered a complication from the surgery and lost her ability to talk. She succeeded in getting a new heart and returned to China, unfortunately she was in a car accident and died.

With determination shining in her blue orbs Ade made up her mind.

'Alex, I promised to life a good life, no running and I intend to fulfil it'

Suddenly the door burst open, the same boy a feet taller than her rushed in.

"Are you hurt? What happened?" He asked worriedly. He had been knocking anxiously after he heard the scream but Ade was lost in her own world to notice.

Looking at the boy with the same features as her though fuller brows and shorter hair, Alex immediately felt short. She sighed deeply in heart.

'I know I look like a glass doll, it's fine I have time to strengthen my bones but why do I have to be short' she sobbed internally.

Hearing his twin sigh repeatedly while looking at him blankly caused him to worry more, he immediately ran out to get help.

The nurse entered the room without slowing her stride at all. One moment she was in the corridor, her eyes dead ahead and the next she was grabbing Alex's hand to take a pulse. In this exchange she neither made eye contact or spoke; Alex began to feel sub-human, as if she no longer qualified as a person at all. The nurse's face was like an overstored apple, round, full, yet crinkled worse than a brown paper bag after all the candy is gone. Her eyes were small, mean, bereft of any make-up and she smelt of detergent. She made a clicking noise with her tongue before pursing withered lips.

"Is she okay?" He asked impatiently but before the nurse could answer Alex asked curtly "Who are you?"
