Chapter 6: Mermaid

Ten minutes later, four people were inside the river trying their best to hold the camouflage net. To Mark's surprise, it was very easy to persuade everyone. After all, everyone hated the army meals.

The problem now was the net. A camouflage net was very different from a fishing net, because the holes in it were bigger, thus, Mark could only hope to catch big fishes, any small fish would quickly escape the net.

The other problem was the weight of the camouflage net, because it was made with ropes instead of nylon, but Mark had a quasi-solution for both problems, there were several ways to fish using a net, someone could throw the net on the water, they could wait with the net on the river, or the least used method, someone could put the net on the bottom of the river and wait a few minutes and then slowly raise the borders to not scare away the fishes, the problem with that way was that it demanded at least four people, and the net needed to be very strong and big, but Mark had it all today.

The only real concern of Mark was the big holes in the net. If the river only had small fishes, it would be a waste of time.

Half an hour later, Mark gave them the signal and everyone started to slowly raise the borders of the fishing net, the pained faces could be seen in everyone, because the net was heavy as hell after it became wet, but with the prospects of eating fish, everyone did their best and slowly but steady they raised the borders and then came closer to each other, the more net around any fish inside the net the harder was for them to escape.

Once Mark saw everyone was close enough, he said, "Now let's pray to the god of fishers and bring this net to the shore"

The entire process was extremely tiring for everyone, but Mark was smiling all the time, that's because he felt the net shaking hard by his side several times when he raised, even if the net didn't have any fishes he knew for sure that the river had fishes, and big ones, because only a big fish could shake a net with holes of that size.

"Slowly, slowly now!" said Mark, because the guy from the back was hurrying the process and that was not good. It could make the fishes more eager to find a way to escape.

The guy heard Mark and calmed himself. Everyone was already feeling the taste of fish in their mouth by now.

Three minutes later, the net came to the shore, and everyone unwrapped it quickly in the hopes of finding fish inside. It was hard to know if the net had any, because of the camouflage on it, and the sheer size of it.

"Here, I found one!" screamed a guy.

Mark immediately raised his head and saw the fish. It was a common carp, of about 10 kg in weight, and judging by the weight alone, Mark knew it was not a mutated fish, because a fish took at least three years to grow to that size in a river, maybe even more.

'At least I will eat fish today,' thought Mark to himself, but suddenly something caught his attention. It was a tiny fish the size of two thumbs, laying still on the net.

'Bingo!'

Mark quickly grabbed it and said aloud, "Do you mind if I take this one as a souvenir?"

"Really? Of course mate, we will be eating fish today all thanks to you! I would give you my wife if I had one! hahahaha" shouted the corporeal and everyone laughed while also thanking Mark.

Half an hour later, the team set off with the water truck.

They agreed to eat the fish at the corporeal house by night but unfortunately they didn't find any other fish inside the net, but a fish of 10 kg was already more than enough for four people to eat.

"See you later, Mark," said the corporeal when Mark jumped from the truck.

"You better know how to prepare that fish, Douglas!" shouted Mark at the truck that kept moving in the direction of the water tower.

Mark didn't delay and hurried to his own apartment. He was not sure if the small fish he caught was a mutated animal or not, and if was, what kind of mutation it had.

'This will be troublesome in the future,' thought Mark. He could not keep eating things, hoping to gain super power without knowing what kind of mutation would happen. 'What if I became a mermaid by eating the fish?'

Mark shook the troubling thoughts and opened the door of his apartment, then threw his things to the side and went to the table.

~sigh~

Mark gave a long sigh to calm himself. He was way too eager for his own taste. 'Haste only makes waste!' It was a saying he heard from his father every time they went camping.

After calming himself, Mark opened his backpack and took the small fish from one of his pockets. The fish was already dead when he found, but it was still good if Mark wanted to eat it. But before that, he put the fish inside the table and started to inspect it closely.

He was not the most knowledgeable about fishes, he only knew the basic things, and the most common ones, if was his father he would immediately spot anything weird in it.

"The scales are fine, mouth and fins too"

Mark could not spot a single thing weird with the fish, 'Maybe is not every single animal that will mutate?' he asked himself, but he had no way to confirm that without exposing the knowledge he had about mutations, and his own mutation.

"Maybe the mutation is inside of it? In an organ?" asked himself Mark, already grabbing the knife from his leg and slowly but steadily cutting the fish open.
