The thing with giving out statements each time someone talks bad about you is that it will become a habit. At first, people will expect you to give explanations, but then their expectations will turn to demands. 

It is exactly why suing for misinformation can backfire. If you keep on suing every time they print a wrong story about you, people will start to believe every story that you didn't sue for, since they'll believe they are true. Suing is taxing and no one can control the stories getting printed about them.
