Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Chad woke up from Ann's screaming. His head was throbbing and bleeding into a small puddle below him. He looked at Stacy who was still unconscious and also bleeding. He unbuckled his seatbelt and let himself fall onto the ceiling of the turnover car. He crawled to the backseat and unbuckled Ann's car seat, catching her before she hit the ceiling of tbe car. Her face was red from her panic and from the blood rushing to her head after being upside down for a while. He tried opening the door, but it was dented into the vehicle so far, it wouldn't budge. Since the window was shattered, he kicked it to get the glass out and set Ann onto the ground outside of the car.

"You stay there, " Chad said. "I'll get your Mom."

He turned around and tapped on Stacy's shoulder hard enough to make her wake up. She touched her wound, calmly, and quietly. She must have been in shock.

"Come on, Stacy, " He unbuckled her seatbelt. "We have to get out."

She began crawling to him, still in her phase. Before she got out of the window, she looked at the empty car seat and began to hyperventilate.

"Ann is okay." He told her and pulled her out through the opening.

Together, they sat down and hugged each other. Stacy began sobbing, holding tightly onto Chad's shirt. Chad, comforting her, stood her to her feet.

"We're going to be okay, Right Ann?"

She didn't answer.

"Ann?"

Ann was standing, looking at a long shiny chain on the road. Spikes were pointing straight up to where if a car drove by, it would slash all four tires. That is exactly what had happened to them. Ann touched on of the blade points, punctured her finger, and quickly put it in her mouth. She turned to where Chad and Stacy sat. "What's this?" She asked.

Chad let go of Stacy and walked to where Ann stood. "Tire Spikes, Someone slashed our tires. Who would do that?"

"Tire spikes?" Stacy called.

Chad looked at the car, hand on his head wound. The tires were ripped open with the sharp points that connect the rubber together sticking out to stab into anything. The windows were shattered around the asphalt road like millions of snowflakes on the ground, covering every inch you could step into. The dents that were inside the car came from the rolling and hitting it against the field of trees. He saw the gasoline spill and spread into a puddle of liquid underneath the destroyed vehicle.

"What do we do now?" Stacy asked.

"It's no one's fault," The doctor told Chad and Stacy. "It just happens."

Stacy looked at Chad with a devilish, enraged glare. She blamed Chad for everything, She knew that she could never forgive him, even if it was her only way to live. She clenched her fists imagining that his neck was in her hands making his eyes red and his lungs numb.

Chad said nothing, he just nodded.

The three of them sat there, as still as the branches above them. The air was cool and thick. There must be a storm drawing near.

Chad looked at his watch. It was 9:17 at night. They were almost an hour late for their appointment. They had to pay the countless whenever they were out of their situation for making them wait at the office for a whole hour. The thunder clapped above them with some drain drops falling onto the ground and they're destroyed vehicle. Chad stood up and took Ann and Stacy by the hands, and as fast as he could run, the hurried down the road they were driving to.

"Where are we going?" Stacy asked. "Why can't we stay in the car?"

Lightning flashed over them.

"We could attract lightning, " He told them, taking Ann in his arm. "It could strike the vehicle and catch the puddle of gas on fire."

"But do trees attract lightning?"

"We have branches around us, but we are not near any tree that could harm us."

"I see something!" Stacy pointed at a billboard in the distance. The rain began pouring by the time they made it to the billboard. The paint on the board was peeling off and the wood looked rotted, but the lights were bright and shiny.

"𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑯𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔

𝑻𝒘𝒐 𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝑵𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒉"

"Withering Heights?" Stacy read the Billboard. "I've never heard of that town."

"There are some towns no one has heard of." Chad answered. "It says it's only two miles north. Shall we go?"

"No, let's stay here in the dark with the rain." She responded sarcastically, walking to the direction the Billboard was faced against. "Coming or what?"

Chad shook his head and followed Stacy.
