What happens when the supposed Utopia you've been living in doesn't seem so Utopian anymore?


"Save me!" I heard a girl scream. "No! Mother, I'm sorry... I'm sorry."
"Do not call me mother." A woman sternly replied.
"I don't want to die. Why can't I have anything I want?!" The girl sobbed.

I felt someone tug on my shirt and I couldn't believe what I saw. It was bloody. The girl, she looked exactly like me. She was on her knees, wounded and bloody. "I'm s-sorry" I stammered against my own will. Who are you? "Please save me, Utopia! I don't want to die yet." she begged crying. 

"I don't understand" I said unconsciously.
"Utopia" She chuckled. "I fucking hate you. This is all your fault! I just wanted to be happy. Why do you have to ruin everything? What did I do to you to deserve this huh? All I wanted was to make me happy, you! Us, Utopia!" She said hysterically.
"Who's Utopia? Who are you? Please help me. I don't know anything anymore." I replied frustrated.


"You really are stupid, aren't you? I am Utopia. You are Utopia!"

"Utopia, Are you alright?" 
"I... don't know. I guess so?" I replied.
"Why were you crying? Did you have a nightmare?" The man with a deep voice asked.

I didn't notice tears flowing down my eyes but remembering what happened earlier, I started to break down. "Was it really bad?" The man asked softly. As a reply, I slightly nodded and tried to look at him in the eye but instead a warm and gentle embrace then enveloped me. It felt so gentle as if I would break if he wasn't careful.  Even though I don't know him, I felt comfortable with him.

I didn't know why but I felt like I've received the warmth I've been craving for ever since then. We spent a few minutes in that position until we heard someone knock on the door.

"Utopia?! Y-you're awake?" 

Shivers went down my spine. It was her! I quickly knew that it was the voice of the woman I heard earlier. She tried to kill Utopia. She tried to kill me? "Utopia, my poor child. How are you? You collapsed earlier. Are you trying to kill your mother?! I was so worried." She said filled with concern. Every time I hear her voice, I see the image of Utopia crying. Every time I see her, my heart experiences an unbearable pain. 

She told me that I am Utopia but if the girl from earlier is also Utopia, does that make us one? If this woman was Utopia's- no my mother, then why did she try to kill Utopia? Why did she try to kill me? I want to believe that it was just a simple delusion but I can't. I feels too real. Come to think of it, Utopia, the girl from my dream was also wounded. Her wounds weren't just from being hit but it also looked like she was burnt. The last thing I can remember is fire. I know the feeling of fire too well.

"Utopia" She called once again disrupting my thoughts. 

I couldn't speak a word and I started trembling. Should I answer her? After having that nightmare, I don't think I can look her in the eye. "Madame, I don't think she's alright. We should let her rest, she must still be processing her thoughts." The man intervened. 

"I guess you're right Kazuki, I'll just leave you with her." She decided. "Get some rest, okay?" She then turned to me.

When I sought for happiness, all I received was sorrow. When I sought for freedom, I was suffocated. I live in a world filled with lies, a world filled with secrets and a world of uncertainty.

I am Utopia and so is she. As she was forgotten, I was set free. Forgetting her was forgetting me so here I am, unraveling the secrets of Utopia.

Black fire and lightning danced with construct of bones and rotten flesh as Asher and Utopia creates a massive constant wave of destruction in their death ballet
"For a mere student you're pretty good..."
Utopia gave the young mage a genuine praise with a eerie smile like a child playing with his food
But despite what he lets on the thoughts circulating through Utopia's head are the exact opposite
(Damn...why is this kid so strong? A normal mage his age would have already passed out from aura exhaustion and magicol depletion by now even if he's a black-aura type (one of the two most potent aura types along with white) no kid should have enough concentration to wage a battle this long, especially against someone like me who's much older, more experienced than him)
Undeads are immune to intense emotions like fear, even if Utopia is only a pseudo Lich right now he should be practically untouchable by fear, but this boy...no, this monster before him made him scared for the first time in what feels like an eternity, it is like fear is the ONLY possible response in a situation like this
Although he had the body of a 12 year old there was something about that figure of Asher that seemed demonic and spine chillingly cold, a figure that exuded an inescapable sensation of ruin and suffering brought about by an unbeatable concept of destruction, like a silent whisper from beyond the veil reminding Utopia that's his existence's inevitable end is creeping ever closer, hidden behind that unchanging expression of his is something dreadful something sinister and unhinged, for some reason Utopia felt glad that Asher's expression has remained stiff...at least for now
Those eyes...those pitch-black eyes like a starless night sky of his, devoid of all emotions, of all light, all morals, reason and boundaries like an all-consuming singularity, having those things set their sights on him is making Utopia extremely uneasy to the point that he was sure if he was still a human, he would be sweating buckets right now
Temporarily distancing himself from these abstract thoughts that have been plaguing him Utopia tried to calmly analyzed the situation:
(Moreover what are those two things on both of his hands? They helped him cast magic so I thought they were Grimoires or something, but a Grimoire can only enhance the potentcy and make it easier for you to cast spells those things somehow have been able to cast magic for him I think? That's probably why he's hasn't even started using his aura, but what are they? No tool in modern magecraft exists that can achieved something like this, and even if it does it would require an unnecessarily large amount of concentration to do the complex calculations required for operating something like that, even if it saves you from using your aura but even if it's activating a pre-made type of magic formation it's still requires you to do the calculations and visualization and exhausting your will in the process, it simply isn't practical to have more aura for a long term fight but not have enough mental stamina to utilize it)
"turris ex dolore [towers of grief]"
Pillars of reddish black energy mounted by unnaturally large and disfigured bones erupts from the ground
But that very same moment the pillars appeared they evaporated as the space around them shattered seems to shatter like glass and all of their effects nullified
"What!?"
(As: phew...that was close if those things spiked up the necrotic energy in the vicinity I would have started taking continuous damage, in order for my plan to work I can't take even a single scratch until exactly 44 minutes after this battle starts, it's only been 26 minutes 15.03 seconds since we started)
"What kind of trickery is this? Someone like you can't possibly know how to cast even the most basic dispelling magic"
"As: Do you really have time to be thinking about that?"
Utopia froze as the voice came from directly behind him
A beam of black light came from behind
Utopia reacted in time firing green flames of necrotic energy from the ground to block the beam
But something was off
Although the two spells made contact he felt no resistance from the opposing side although the two spells should be lock in a fierce tug of war right now
That's when he realised 
Multiple tiny needles made of lightning pieced Utopia's undead body 
Even if it's pseudo undead Utopia's body is still made of muscle and bones so it naturally got paralysed by the attack
And that gave Asher the perfect opportunity 
"As: gravitatis magnificare | [gravity magnification]"
Asher increased the gravity around Utopia by 20 times crushing 87% of his bones and turning his flesh (or what remained of it) to mush, with only his head and a little bit of his upper torso remaining 
"Ow...well, that was certainly painful"
Unable to move Utopia Accidentally leaked out that sentence
"As: walk it off, Undeads are immune to pain anyway, unless your pathetic excuse of a **** isn't even big enough to realize that..."
Landing 8 meters away from Utopia Asher said
"As:...actually considering that it's you, I wouldn't be surprised if you had that condition, in that case I apologize for my rude remarks earlier as I didn't intend to insult you that much"
As if mocking him Asher bowed with courtesy as he give a sincere apology
A vein popped up on Utopia's fore head as he showed a forced smile
"You seem quite young to be courting death no?"
"As: you would know a lot about that wouldn't you? Compensating for something?"
Still maintaining his monotonous and polite manner of speaking Asher replied with a straight-laced face
"Don't you fvcking dare mock me you brat!"
Utopia screamed with indignation
"As: don't be so serious, it was only a fleeting joke, you're way too old to fall for cheap vulgar provocations by a kid like me, or is it that the only thing more universally disappointing than your manhood is your intelligence? You did turned from being one of the great mages who founded Avalon to a cult leader after making the stupidest mistake a magic caster could make after all, a decrepit, desperate old man who couldn't undo his mistakes so he pathetically tries to dye the world in his own colors in the faint hope that if everyone is as pathetic as him no one will laugh (Universal analogy showed me everything, everyone of his "apprentices" except for Arias are either crippled in magic or damn near to being so), you can't get anymore pitiful than that now can you?"
"...It's a real shame you're this insolent little mage, you would have made a good guinea pig but now I think I'll just kill you"
The darken expression of Utopia saids it all leaking even more killing intent then before like an unending flood
"As: good...maybe now you'll somewhat of a threat to me"
But before the literal singularity of hatred and killing intent that is Asher Utopia's rage was replaced by that odd fear of the unknown again
(He wasn't mocking me...he was trying to make me get serious? Just who the hell is this kid? And why am I feeling like I have zero chance of winning in this situation?)
They say a man shows his true colors once he is on the verge of death, because the desperation from an impossible to overcome situation will force him to use everything he has only to fail
But against a person like Asher, a kid who has face so many un-win-able situations that he has lost count, where even the impossible can be reduce to nothing Utopia can literally feel his colors draining from him

"Powerhold! Attack Yuma's Gogogo Golem with Power Cannon!"

Bronks giant mechanical monster took aim with its mighty cannon, arcs of emerald energy built up around its opening as it built up its power and fired at Yuma's golden form golem. The mighty beam crashed against Yuma's monster like a raging river and obliterated it from the field.

[PHMB ATK:4100 > GGGF ATK:2100 – Yuma LP > 2000]

Unfortunately, while Yuma's Gogogo Golem – Golden Form halved any battle damage his opponent received the same could not be said about the reverse. Yuma was knocked down by the blast, landing only an inch or two away from the edge of the Seal. Getting up, a corner of his shirt brushed against the Seal and ignited into flame.

"Yikes! That was close." He exclaimed as he smacked the small flame out before it could do any real damage, glad that he hadn't actually touched the Seal himself.

But now he was out of monsters and Bronk still had his Orichalcos boosted Green Gadget and Yellow Gadget left to attack.

"Stop it Bronk!", "Don't do it!" came the cries from their friends on the side line. But to the current Bronk these words were just meaningless.

"Green Gadget, attack Yuma directly!"

"I activate my face down <Pinpoint Guard> this trap revives my original Gogogo Golem in defence mode and it cannot be destroyed in battle this turn." 

[Gogogo Golem – Lv4 ATK:1800/DEF:1500]

The charging Gadget was brought to an abrupt halt by the appearance of Yuma's monster.

"Keep stalling Yuma, it won't change your fate, I end my turn."

[Turn 4 - Yuma LP:2000 Hand 3, Bronk LP:3150 Hand:2]

Yuma was frustrated at his helplessness at the moment. New Order had turned his best friend against him, Astral had been knocked out by the power unleashed by the Seal, they were hopelessly lost somewhere that Drake had almost no chance of find them and he was in a duel where the loser forfeited his soul.

What was he going to do?!

Yuma checked his extra deck. It was practically empty.
Without Astral, Yuma couldn't use the Number cards they had collected, he couldn't use Utopia…and without them did he even have a chance to deal with the Seal? What could he do? No matter what, one thing was sure. He wasn't going to give up on his friend!

Golden light began to shine from the middle of his extra deck with a familiar power. Picking out the card Yuma was shocked to see S39: Utopia Prime, the card he had created through Shining evolution. But why was it still in his Extra deck? 

Suddenly the card erupted with power and a golden beam blasted out through the Seal and towards the unconscious Astral. From his body a single white shining card flew back along the golden beam and into Yuma's hand before revealing itself.

The true, one and only, Number 39: Utopia!

"Thanks Astral." 

Whatever the reason, he chose to believe it was a helping hand from his friend. The two of them had been through so much, overcome so many challenges. And this was the card that symbolised their bond. It had never let them down before and Yuma refused to believe it would fail now.

"Get ready Bronk, I draw! Next I summon <Ganbara Knight>"

[Ganbara Knight – Lv4 ATK:0/DEF:1800]

"With this card and my Gogogo Golem I now build the Overlay Network! I Overlay my two level 4 monster to Xyz summon, <Number 39: Utopia>! In defence mode."

[Number 39: Utopia – Rank 4 ATK:2500/DEF:2000 OU:2]

The white and gold warrior emerged from the black vortex of the Overlay Network, imposing itself between Yuma and foe. Its golden swords held in a crossed blocking position.

Not only did Utopia have the ability to negate attacks, but as a Number only another Number could destroy it in battle. Even though Bronk may have the strongest monster, so long as he had Utopia he had hope.

"Come on Bronk, doesn't this bring back any memories? This isn't you! Don't you remember the time I gave you Utopia and you saved me and Astral from Number 96? Whatever they did to you I know you can fight it!"

"Fight it? Why would I fight this? I have never felt this powerful. You think having a Number makes you powerful? I will show that in front of the power of the Great Seal your precious Utopia is nothing! So just Duel!" Bronk snapped.

"…I set one card face down and end my turn."

[Turn 5 - Bronk LP:3150 Hand:2, Yuma LP:2000 Hand 2]

"Draw."

Although Bronk put on an act of distain towards Utopia, he was secretly shocked. As was the watching Proteus. They had seen how Utopia had managed to breach the barrier of the Seal just now to reach Yuma's side. Such a thing should not be possible. But although Yuma had managed to retrieve his favourite Number it would not matter.

Bronk's deck had been built to deal even with the power of the Numbers.

"I move Yellow Gadget to the front row and switch it to defence, then set a card face down and end my turn."

[Turn 6 - Yuma LP:2000 Hand 2, Bronk LP:3150 Hand:2]

"I draw! Then I will draw 2 more thanks to my <Pot of Greed>. Next I will discard my <XYZ Agent> from my hand to activate the spell <Onomatopaira>. This spell lets me add <Gagaga Magician> and <Gogogo Giant> to my hand."

"If you won't listen to my words, then I can only continue to knock some sense into you." Yuma declared.

"Not with my Powerhold on the field you won't!"

"Then I just need to scrap your walking junk pile, won't I! First I summon my Gagaga Magician to the field."

[Gagaga Magician – Lv4 ATK:1500/DEF:1000]

Yuma's favourite magician took centre stage, its black coat and iron chains swaying to its movements. 

"Next is the spell <Gagaga Bolt>, since I control a Gagaga monster I can destroy a card on your side of the field, so I destroy your Powerhold!"

Lifting a pointed finger to the sky, black thunderclouds gather above Yuma's Gagaga Magician. Sweeping its hand down a bolt of lighting followed its direction and blasted into Bronks mechanical menace, reducing it to scrap metal.

"Since Powerhold was a machine monster, destroying it adds two more junk counters to my Machine Assembly Line." Bronk said as his machines moved to consume the remaining junk heap.

[Machine Assembly Line – Junk Counters 2 > 4]

"Now I switch my Utopia to attack position and attack your Yellow Gadget with Rising Sun Slash!"
Utopia launched itself at Bronk's toy like monster, and slashed down with its brilliant blade. Yuma hoped this attack be able to get through to his friend. But before it could finish its swing…

"I activate my trap <Fiendish Chain>, these chains will tie up your Utopia, preventing it from attacking and negating all its effects so long as it is on the field." 

Utopia was held helplessly in position, is blade mere inches from Bronk's panic stricken Gadget, around it wrapped dark copper like chains, that at odd intervals burned with a pale blue flame. Tightening their grip, the chains hoisted Utopia from the steel girders and bound his arms to his sides.

"Then I will destroy your Yellow Gadget with Gagaga Magician!"

[GM - ATK:1500 > YG - DEF:1200]

"I end my turn with a facedown."

[Turn 7 - Bronk LP:3150 Hand:2, Yuma LP:2000 Hand:1]

"I draw. You should just give up Yuma, you have no hope of beating me. I have always been the better duellist, without Astral you don't have a chance." Bronk taunted.

"Your right, you were always the better duellist, no matter how many times I challenged you each day, you always beat me. But it was because we were friends that you never refused my challenge, that I wanted to improve and become a duel champion. Don't you remember?"

"Enough! I play <Graceful Charity> to draw 3 and then discard 2. Then I summon <Silver Gadget> and with its effect I can also special summon a <Red Gadget> from my hand to the field. My Red Gadgets effect allows me to add another Yellow Gadget to my hand from my deck."

[Silver Gadget – Lv4 ATK:1500 > 2200/DEF:1000, Red Gadget – Lv4 ATK:1300 > 2000/DEF:1500]

With the power of the Seal and his Machine Assembly Line running through his monsters circuits, even Bronk's weaker monsters would be transformed into powerhouses.  

"Next I sacrifice my Machine Assembly Line, this lets me special summon a machine monster from the grave whose level is equal or less than the number of junk counters my spell card had, which was 4. So I summon my <Gold Gadget> back to the field and its effect lets me special summon another Yellow Gadget, whose effect then adds a Green Gadget to my hand. But without my Machine Assembly Line my monsters now lose their 200 ATK power boost.

[Gold Gadget – Lv4 ATK:1700 > 2200/DEF:800, Green Gadget – ATK:2100 > 1900, Silver Gadget –ATK:2200 > 2000, Red Gadget – ATK:2000 > 1800, Yellow Gadget – ATK:1900 > 1700]

The Gold General, Proteus, emotionlessly watch on. As the one who had built Bronk's new deck he knew what was coming next now that Bronk had gathered so many Gadget monsters together. It seemed that Silvers plan would soon succeed after all.

"I will now create the Overlay Network, with these monsters I have gathered as an offering I now Xyz Summon <Metrohold the Moving City> to the field. This card can be Xyz summoned with 2 or more Lv4 Gadget monsters and I am using five!"

[Metrohold the Moving City – Rank 4 ATK:?/DEF:3000 OU:5]

A mechanical titan slowly emerged from the black vortex, a being so massive it could crush Utopia within a single fist.  A burning red power core blazed in the centre of its chest as it lifted a massive metal hammer in its right hand. Around that hammer orbited its five Overlay Units.

"My Metrohold gains attack equal the number of its Overlay Units time 1000, and it also receives 500 ATK with the power of the Seal. This means it currently has 5500 ATK!"

[Metrohold the Moving City – ATK:? > 5500]

"5500 ATK?!?! That's crazy!" screamed Caswell. He and the rest of Yuma's friends despaired at the appearance of such a powerful monster. 

"You wanted me to remember our past Yuma? Well I promise I'm going to remember this moment as I put an end to it. I attack Utopia with Metrohold, Titan Strike!"

*Wwwhhhizzzzzzzzzz*

Steam whittled out of multiple pipes and vents across Metroholds body as its great gears squealed to its movements as it lifted its hammer high over its head. At its apex of its swing the back of the hammer head erupted as rocket engines fired to launch the hammer downwards at an even faster crushing speed. 

"I activate my facedown, <Dust tornado>, which allows me to destroy your Fiendish Chain" Yuma shouted as his trap card unleashed a violent whirlwind which cut through Bronk's trap and freed his Utopia from its bindings.

"And thanks to that I can now activate Utopia's Special ability. Go Light Wing Shield! My removing an Overlay unit (Gogogo Golem) I can negate your attack!"

[Number 39: Utopia – OU 2 > 1]

Utopia's white wings stretched out overhead enlarging as they shone their golden light, Metrohold's hammer came crashing down onto the glowing wings in a clash that sent shockwaves across the field. But Utopia remained standing tall and strong under the protection of its Light Wing Shield.

"I end my turn."

[Turn 8 - Yuma LP:2000 Hand:1, Bronk LP:3150 Hand:2]

"I draw, I switch Utopia and Gagaga Magician to defence mode and end my turn."

Yuma was flustered but there was nothing else to be done. He wished Astral would wake up as he could really use some help right now. How could he deal with a monster that had over 5000 attack points!

"Come on Astral, what would you do…?" he whispered.

[Turn 9 - Bronk LP:3150 Hand:2, Yuma LP:2000 Hand:2]

"Draw. I attack Gagaga magician with Metrohold."

Bronk wasted no time with small talk and since he couldn't Destroy Yuma's Number he would just settle for wiping his other monster off the field instead.

[MMC ATK:5500 > GM DEF:1000]

*BOOM*

Metrohold's great hammer came smashing down and flattened the magician like a swatted fly.

"Did you see that Yuma, this is real power, and by serving the Great Beast this is just the start of what I can achieve."

"But what good is such power if you are alone, do you really think these people are your friends?! They are just using you! We're your friends Bronk! Please listen to us!"

"Quiet! I summon <Green Gadget> to the back row and add a Red Gadget to my hand."

[Green Gadget – Lv4 ATK:1400 > 1900/DEF:600]

"I set a face down and end my turn."

[Turn 10 - Yuma LP:2000 Hand:2, Bronk LP:3150 Hand:2]

If Yuma didn't do something soon, he knew that Bronk's mechanical menace would be the end of him, but with over 5000 ATK what could he do? If only it didn't have so many Overlay Units… Wait. Yuma suddenly realised that he did have a card in his deck that could take down Bronk's monster. But could he draw it?

Yuma thought back to a time after his duel against Segnir, when he had asked Astral about the special draw he had pulled off then, the Shining Draw, and how he could use that kind of power again. What did Astral say again? Tap into your heart when you draw, believe in your cards and focus your will on what you need.

Yuma closed his eyes and focused. He could feel something… something warm and familiar. He knew what he needed and he knew that deck would not let him down!

"Go Shining Draw!" With a golden glow around his hand Yuma draw his card, leaving a golden arc of light in its path.

It worked!! Thanks Astral! Yuma thought.

"I now summon my <Gogogo Giant>, when my monster is summoned I can special summon <Gogogo Golem> from my grave in defence by switching my Giant into defence mode."
Yuma block like giant looked like a child compare to Bronk's Metrohold as it pulled its smaller sibling Gogogo Golem back from the grave. He might not have any more of his Numbers to call upon but he still had tricks he could play.

"With these two monsters I build the Overlay Network and Xyz summon <Gagaga Cowboy>"

[Gagaga Cowboy – Rank 4 ATK:1500/DEF:2400 OU:2]

"And the point of this is? You know that your monster has no hope of stopping my Titan right? And because it is on my front row you can't attack my other monsters. Maybe you have decided to do the smart thing and just give up. It will be less painful for you that way." Bronk mocked as he tried to ignore a strange headache that he felt coming on, choosing to instead focus on the incredible power of the Seal that was flowing through him.
 
"No way am I ever giving up on you Bronk! You're my friend and nothing you say will change that! So lets Jet! I play <Overlay Capture> this spell gets rid of all your monsters Overlay units before becoming an Overlay Unit which I attach to Utopia. And since your monster relies on its Overlay Units for its attack, you monster now drops to 500ATK!"

[Number 39: Utopia – OU: 1 > 2, Metrohold the Moving City – ATK:5500 > 500 OU: 5 > 0]

"NO!"

Bronk's monster seemed to slump, its puffing steam fizzed out as the red glow of its core faded to a feeble glimmer. 

"Now it's time I cut your giant down to size, I switch Utopia into attack mode and attack your Moving City! Rising Sun Slash!"

[N39 ATK:2500 > MMC ATK:500 - Bronk LP > 1150]

*SLASH*

Bronk's monster was sliced in half and exploded into a blast of smoke. Yuma knew he need more time to figure a way to get the both of them out of this situation, but he couldn't just be on the defensive or Bronk would eventually build up enough force of overwhelm him. 

"Next Gagaga Cowboy will attack your Green Gadget! And by using one Overlay Unit, my monster gains a 1000ATK while yours loses 500!"

Bronks monster appeared like a wall, blocking Yuma's monster from attacking his helpless Gadgets.

"So what? Now you monster is nothing but a big wall, I will smash it down and find a way to save both of us. I won't give up even till the end, because I am your friend Bronk no matter what New Order has done to you. I end my turn."

All of a sudden, the muscles on Wendel's back began to tense up as if he were about to explode.
He was shocked and doubtful as several guesses flashed through his mind.
The residents of Utopia are monsters in human skin. They usually look normal, but once they encounter blind spots in logic, they would show a side that is different from an ordinary person, ignoring the points that are obviously problematic?
Or perhaps that staff realized that I was lying and was unwilling to deal with me, so he pretended not to see me and let me go? But why?

Wendel instinctively turned his gaze out of the window, only to see the sunlight shining on the platform he was at. One by one, passengers waited in order behind the safety line, completely different from the dark and gloomy vibes that Utopia gave off.
Phew… He exhaled and suddenly relaxed.
This isn't Utopia… I've already left… Wendel murmured to himself as he wiped away the cold sweat that had seeped out from his forehead.
When he recalled his oversight earlier, it was as if he had fallen into a nightmare that he couldn't wake up from no matter how hard he tried.
After a while, Wendel stood up and decided to smoke at the platform to ease his mood.
The tobacco comforted him greatly, allowing him to recall his past experiences in Utopia.
During this process, he gained inspiration from his encounter:

Compared to the entire population of Utopia being monsters hiding underneath human skin, Wendel was more willing to accept this explanation.

They were saying that the kingdom didn't have a station known as Utopia at all, and last night, the steam locomotive had gone "missing"!
At that moment, a strong sense of horror surged through Wendel's heart again. He felt that it was his greatest blessing to be able to leave Utopia alive.

Alfred spent nearly a week before returning to Backlund from Eskelson Harbor.
This was because he had visited the family of his deceased comrades, his old friends, the elders who had returned to their fief for vacation, and some of his family's business partners along the way.
"This is even more tiring than participating in battle," Alfred grumbled to his father, Earl Hall.
Earl Hall smiled and pointed at the staircase.
"Return to your room and get some rest. We'll talk in the study later."
He was quite satisfied with the mental state and progress of his second son.
Alfred surveyed the area and asked with a smile, "Where's the most dazzling jewel of Backlund?"
He paused for a moment before adding, "What about Hibbert?"
Earl Hall laughed and said, "Audrey went to her foundation and will only return in the afternoon. She kept complaining that you couldn't provide her with a definite schedule, preventing her from knowing when you would arrive.
"Hibbert is now a cabinet secretary. He's very busy."
Alfred nodded and returned to his room to take a shower. He changed into a shirt, vest, and formal suit.
"I prefer East Balam's casualness." He looked into the mirror and smiled at his adjutant.
"This outfit makes you look more like a noble," his adjutant said as he handed him the document in his hand. "General, this is from MI9."
"MI9?" Alfred thoughtfully destroyed the seal on the envelope. "There's a result regarding the investigation of Utopia that quickly?"
Before he could finish his sentence, he pulled out the document and flipped through it.
During this process, Alfredo flipped through the pages slower and slower. In the end, he read it again from the first page.
The main content of this investigation was divided into two parts: 
The first was regarding the MI9 member who had dispatched Alfred's report. He had accidentally entered Utopia and witnessed a murder case. He managed to forcefully escape in the middle of the night and return to the steam locomotive. The second was that the railways in Desi Bay which led to Backlund didn't have a stop named Utopia Station along the way, nor was there a harbor known as Utopia in the Berserk Sea. The subsequent investigators didn't find any traces.
The two cases didn't exceed the limits of Alfred's imagination. What surprised him was the criminal involved in the murder.
Her name was Tracey. She was the owner of a hotel. She had received middle-class education and graduated from grammar school. After that, she became a mistress of a businessman. Recently, she was trying to free herself from this identity.
This was identical to the owner of the harbor hotel, Tracey, that Alfred had met. Every detail matched.
As a result, Alfred determined that the culprit behind the murder was Tracey, the beautiful woman who had received a certain degree of education, who was able to produce sad music in the middle of the night.
Is this her backstory? Alfred muttered to himself silently.
This made the residents of Utopia seem very realistic. It wasn't what Alfred had expected—an illusion.
In other words, after the outsiders left, the inhabitants of Utopia continued to lead their own lives. They had their own love, hatred, pains, and sorrow. They had all sorts of experiences.
Apart from Utopia seeming to not exist in the real world, it was similar to any ordinary town in the Loen Kingdom.
Perhaps, Utopia is real. Everyone there is real. However, if one wants to enter the town, they have to be in the right place at the right time… Alfred nodded indiscernibly and put away the investigation report he had received from MI9.
To him, even if this matter ended here, he had no intention to investigate further.
One had to know that, in the Southern Continent, there were countless bizarre incidents and phenomena. If one was too curious, it would only bring him greater danger than he imagined.
After adjusting his clothes and mood, Alfred came to his father's study and knocked on the door with his curled finger.
"Come on in." Earl Hall's voice rang out.
Alfred tidied his blond hair, pushed the door open, and sat down.
Earl Hall smiled at him and said, "You're already a man."
"No one would say such words to a man," Alfred replied without any reservations.
"In my heart, you're still that rebellious youth," Earl Hall said with a smile. "You're already a Sequence 5 Beyonder?"
Alfred replied with a double entendre, "Yes, I am a real knight."
Earl Hall nodded and suddenly sighed.
"You should've experienced a lot of hardship.
"From what I know, no matter if it's the potions or war, they will bring serious damage to people, from their bodies to their minds."
"Everyone undergoes a lot of pain in their lives," Alfred said with a sigh.
He used a Loen-styled euphemism.
After a pause, he added, "Compared to when I left Backlund, my present state is even better. As long as I grasp a method properly, I don't need to worry too much about the impact of the madness at my level."
Earl Hall didn't continue on this matter and instead said, "Your sister has also become a Beyonder."
"Oh?" Alfred was shocked at first, but then he remembered something. He said with some annoyance, "I thought she just changed her hobby."
"From the looks of it, Audrey's adventure had a little bit of your help," Earl Hall said, seemingly enlightened. "I hope you can talk to her about how dangerous, crazy, and painful it is about the Sequence potions. Let her remain at her current level."
Alfred replied without hesitation, "I'll do it."
In the evening, in Audrey's small study room.
"Alfred, why are you looking for me?" Audrey, who had changed into home clothes, led Susie and opened the door for her brother.
She had been waiting for her brother for a few minutes.
"I have something to warn you of." Alfred walked into the study and casually pulled a chair over.
Audrey smiled and pointed at the golden retriever.
"Do you need Susie to leave?"
Alfred couldn't help but smile as he looked at the obedient golden retriever who was sitting by the side, her eyes filled with a look of sentience.
"There's no need for that. I believe it won't eavesdrop on our conversation."
"She," Audrey casually corrected him.
After the noble girl sat opposite him, Alfred sighed inwardly.
After not seeing her for a few years, her younger sister was no longer as tender as before. Regardless of her looks or temperament, she had already reached a level that brought about amazement. She was no longer the little girl from the past.
Alfred retracted his gaze and asked casually, "I heard that you became a Beyonder?"
"Yes." Audrey nodded frankly.
Alfred had originally planned on asking what Sequence she was, but after some thought, he felt that it was too direct. It was easy for her to flare up, so he deliberated over his words and said, "You should be a Beyonder of the Spectator pathway, right? The Rainbow Salamander has similar powers."
The Rainbow Salamander was a gift from Alfred to his sister.
After Audrey gave an affirmative answer, Alfred joked, "Can you do treatment in the mind domain now? Most Beyonders, including me, need help in this aspect. Yes, I forgot to tell you that I'm already a Sequence 5 Disciplinary Paladin of the Arbiter pathway."
Audrey pursed her lips and smiled.
"I'm a qualified psychiatrist who has undergone professional training. You can verify this with Father and Mother."
She's already a Sequence 7… Alfred's expression gradually turned solemn.
"Audrey, I have to remind you that the potions do not only bring about strength."
Having said that, he paused and observed his sister's reaction. He realized that Audrey wasn't impatient at all and was listening very seriously.
"Every potion contains madness that can lead to a loss of control… I've seen similar situations before. More than once… They happened to my enemies, and they happened to my friends. No one is spared…" Alfred amalgamated his experiences in East Balam and began explaining the dangers of the potion in detail.
During this process, he realized that his sister, Audrey, wasn't the only one listening attentively. Furthermore, Susie, the golden retriever, appeared extremely quiet.

I'm an old man, and my days are numbered; There's no denying that fact. I'm fine with death, I truly am. What exists on the other side isn't exactly a mystery to me, and though it is far from the Utopia we were promised, It's something I've come to accept.

Despite all of that, I could never allow myself to leave this place. There's been too much pain and death in my family, and while they all chose to die, it's just something I can't bring myself to understand.

Mark, my grandson, was the last to go; He'd chosen the same path his brother, just as their father did before them.

Now, at the ripe old age of eighty-three, I'm all that's left.

It has been about three weeks since Mark's untimely demise. I'd spoken to him on the day of his death, tried to convince him to say, and by God, I thought I had. I was so astonishingly confident that I'd swayed him to deny Lucifer his deal, that he could walk away from the irresistible temptations of Utopia.

Alas, I was wrong…

The nightmares started that very same night. Before I even realised Mark had perished.

Once I drifted off to a restless sleep, I suddenly found myself inside what looked like a massive dome. Obsidian-black, flesh covered walls stretching far and wide, surrounding me on each side.

There must have been hundreds of thousands of people integrated into the fleshy tangles, all torn to shreds, smeared across, leaving only a few limbs and partially digested faces to remind me that the mass of meat had once been human.

Some of them, however, managed to free themselves from the flesh-ridden prison, and emerged from the walls only to fall apart on the ground beneath them.

They should have died then and there, but some bizarre force kept reassembling them, putting them back together in the wrong order; Their joints jumbled around, and their necks shattered to pieces, with their spine protruding through their skin.

Despite their obvious agony, nothing would allow them to simply die, after all, how could they?

After an eternity of staring at the immense suffering of the people in front of me, I realised that I wasn't in control of my body. I hadn't been incorporated into the wall like the others, I simply didn't own the body, nor the eyes I looked through. I was an unwilling passenger in someone else's life.

Whoever I had been stuck inside, they didn't feel human. There was something otherworldly, and powerful about their presence.

The person frantically ran around, as if they hadn't yet realised what kind horrific place they were stuck in. I could feel the tears well up in eyes that weren't mine, and the intense desire to leave, but before they could, a man appeared out of nowhere.

He stood tall before me, a stark contrast to his surroundings; Wearing a perfectly tailored suit, frowning at the supposed intruder in his domain.

At an instant, I recognised the man, though in my dreamlike state, I couldn't place him.

He was angry, and simply stood there not saying a word, letting the agonised screams of the people around him do his talking, he was proving a point, and he didn't even have to say a word. After a minute, he finally broke the silence with a single sentence: "I'm very disappointed in you, Lilith."

I startled awake, breathing as rapidly as a man in his eighties possibly could, and as soon as my mind could come to terms with what I'd just seen, I knew exactly where I'd seen the man before, even if it had been several decades since out last meeting.

I knew then the dream hadn't just been something conjured by my ageing imagination; It was a memory, not one of my own, but one that belonged to Lilith.

The phone rang, bringing me further into the waken world. My stomach sank as I picked it up, a dreadful feeling washing over my soul.

Even before they said anything on the other end, I knew what the phone call entailed; My grandson had died from a heart attack.

Ten days passed, and the nightmares continued, each of them another memory of a twisted Utopia. A world that lingered on the brink of our reality, touching it just enough to allow some to cross.

I saw the Silver City, a facade of a concrete jungle full of pain, trying to fool its inhabitants into thinking that they were safe, happy, that they'd found salvation.

Through Lilith, I had a connection to the place, however much I resented it. She allowed me to sense its people, even without seeing them. They were in pain, but the pain was masked by the illusion of Utopia, and for each second they spend there, the place fed of them.

That's all the people were, food for the ever growing beast that lay beneath the city, and that's where I would have ended up had I taken Lucifer's offer all those years ago.

As time went on, I could actively look, or sense people I had known back when they were alive. I found Mark wandering the hellscape he'd chosen to enter. As I saw him suffering, I felt both pity and disappointment.

But he was family, and I loved him with every fibre of my being. The fact that I could do nothing but watch him wander, alone and frightened, shattered my heart to a million pieces.

Then, like it had happened back on that fateful night in 1976, I was jolted awake by a knock at the door.

I pushed myself out of bed, noticing a silver envelope lying on my bedside table. While looking at letter, dumbfounded, I was once again brought back to the task at hand by more violent knocking.

With a lot of hesitation, I slowly walked towards the door. Upon opening it, I wasn't greeted by a well dressed man, smiling wide, but by a frazzled man I'd never seen before.

"Please, don't close the door, I need you to listen to me!" the man plead.

I obliged, anything to delay another nightmare in bed.

"Who are you?"

He paused for a moment, something about his facial expression, the way he raised his brows before talking, felt familiar.

"This is going to sound crazy, I know, but-" he paused.

"But?"

"It's me, granddad, it's Mark, I don't know exactly how I'm here, or why I look like this, but I swear, it's me."

He took a deep breath, patiently awaiting my response. Truth be told, I didn't even need to think, I knew it was Mark, despite through the almost impossible presentation of the idea, my heart just couldn't deny it.

"I believe you."

Relieved, and confused, he embraced me in a hug, and I invited him inside. Over a couple of shots of whisky, we talked about what had happened.

He told me how he'd spent a century walking through the city of Utopia, how he'd been saved by a woman named Lilith.

"Lilith?" I asked, surprised.

"You know her?"

"You could say so," I responded.

With that, Mark pulled out a silver envelop just like the one I'd found by my bedside.

Mark,

I'm inside the Dome, don't worry, I'll take it from here. You might already know yourself as a stranger. Whatever life you once led, has passed, and despite your most valiant efforts, no one will ever recognize you as Mark Shepherd.

I'm sorry, but it's the only way to keep Lucifer from taking you back here.

Enjoy the time you've been given, find whatever meaning that still exists on Earth.

The creature that is Utopia is about to awaken, and unless I'm able to destroy it once and for all, it's coming for Earth next.

Once I'd completed reading the letter, I finished my drink in a single sip, before rushing into my bedroom to grab my very own silver envelope.

I held it up and compared it to Mark's, they had exactly the same pattern covering its bright, silver surface. I opened it, and pulled out a perfect piece of paper, with beautifully handwritten text across it. I read it out aloud.

Dear Joseph,

I know you've been watching Utopia through my eyes for the past couple of weeks, though I cannot fathom who or what gave you that ability. I suppose there's something special about you, considering you're the only one denying Lucifer his deal.

Let me tell you, I don't enjoy having an uninvited passenger along for the ride, to have someone stuck inside my head, it's weird as all hell, but honestly, it might come in handy.

You should know that Mark, your grandson, is back alive. I brought him back after he let me inside The Dome, because I truly believed I could destroy it on my own.

I was wrong… Lucifer wouldn't let his most prized creation just perish without a fight.

The thing is, Joseph, that the universe always needs to be in balance, whether that's the laws of physics, or rules created by a higher power, I don't know, but it means that if Mark is to stay on Earth, someone is going to have to leave.

Since I need your help, that's going to be you. Which means you'll have to die.

I'm sorry, I truly am, but unless we work together, there won't be any Earth left for anyone to enjoy.

I put the letter down on the table, and looked over at Mark. He was shaking, an undeniable look of regret in his eyes.

"I-I I didn't know, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," he stuttered.

Those words, the fact that I had to take his place in Utopia, it destroyed him. I just walked over and gave him a hug.

"It's not your fault, Mark, don't even think it."

I let Mark stay with me for the next few days, as we tried to figure out our next step. We thought about telling is wife, but I doubt she'd understand, even if she did believe us, the idea of Utopia would be too much to accept.

So we bided our time, tried to think of any way to contact Lilith; As the dream didn't end, each night as I drifted away, I saw the horrors of Utopia through Lilith's eyes. I wondered if she could hear my thoughts, but if she did, she never acknowledged them.

Through her mind, I learned more about what Utopia was. Not the city, not the idea, not the people, but a living, breathing being, fed with millions people, growing in size by each passing day, just waiting to awaken.

That's what Utopia is, the fleshscape, the mangled corpses, and the suffering that allows it to keep living.

Last night, it all changed. Thus far, I'd only seen memories of the past, but during that night, I was given a vision of Utopia spilling out of its realm, and into our world. Utopia and Earth became one, and the broken beings that were once human came back to walk among us.

People, broken souls that had become a part of Lucifer's army, one that could only grow by taking over another world; Our world.

As I awoke, panting and drenched in sweat, I looked out the window, into the peaceful night. The world was still running, the planet spinning as it had for billions of years.

But, the more I learned to understand Utopia, the more I realised the time didn't move as it was supposed to, and that the laws of physics that we know and love, don't always apply outside our own realm.

My dream, it absolutely was a memory, it was just one that hadn't happened yet.
