Thornier: Hopefully Ves finds a way to kill Venerable Foster in the future. She seems psychotic.

KhanarL: I'm thinking that there will eventually be a showdown between venerable Foster and captain orfan. Hopefully between whatever happens in the starlight megalodon and the reality shock from learning the vandals are destroyed will boost orfan to expert.

killab: Me too, lieutenant dise will most likely become the new leader of the Swordmaidens which in turn will become more of an elite force.

This is where Ves realizes for the second time that he really needs the ability to personally f*ck over an expert pilot from a distance. Ideally he needs either a spirituality ability or a inventory storable graser. View More

I will simply put that as the descendents of humanity it is morally wrong to commit genocide against them. However it was also mentioned that the CFA might even "cleanse" the planet of dwarves so their is a distinct disgust at this high G variant of humanity prevalent in society. I don't think Ves is in.b,hcc

Yeah, historically humanity has a knack for genocide... Still not sure what that has to do with Ves's flexible morality. View More

crackedcacti: Arguably more Neanderthal I’ll grant you. However, against genocidal humanity? Even our record in reality is not pretty when it comes to close to us vs. same species. To me it steps into the moral grey area, with a large emphasis on even primitives with sticks are a threat, and should be treated as such.

Given the Vandals are not raping, looting, and burning down with fire everything in sight....eh. Remember, the Vandals and maidens have been in combat conditions for months at this point. Accumulated stress, gravity, supply shortages....troops need downtime too. They’ve been in Combat Ops for a very long time at this point, including in space before planetfall.

They have language, family and tribal structure, use tools, have religion, understand concepts such as this figurine represents you, etc. What we are looking at is more akin to a stone age tribal society with an is of around 70-80. It's kinda like dealing with a person with Down syndrome, they aren't on my level and may look weird but they are undeniably human. View More

crackedcacti: They are not human tho. They are more like chimps then humans, with the genetic restructuring.

If it wasn't way out in the frontier I would be concerned about the possibility of disrupting the geopolitical balance. As long as only the CFA/MTA have this ability it would be ok.

However if a country got a hold of it, imagine the potential effect of stretching 2-3 expert pilots to each frontline regiment. They would be able to wipe out the entire frontline, punch through a key strategic bastion, or simply get behind enemy line and wreck havoc. View More

KhanarL: While gaining a way to reliably produce expert pilots would be a definite game changer, I don't think this is going to be a big deal in the long term. Qilanxo needed to use some higher dimensional energy to initiate this change. So if the Flagrant Vandals or other groups end up fixing or turning off the malfunctioning FTL drive from the Starlight Megalodon, then the sacred gods would lose their special abilities.

Thanks for the chapter.

This was kinda mind blowing. I can picture this planet becoming a cfa/mta holy ground. The ability to manufacture an expert pilot with a remote control ability has terrifying implications. View More

I know. He has a total idgaf attitude about it. When the chief tried to point out moral issues he shrugged it off with a casual platitude.

I think Ves has a lot more in common with the skull architect than he realizes. View More

It's great seeing how much Ketis has grown. It's also fun reading about the odd relationship between Ves and Q(not remembering how to spell that). They seem oddly intimate.

I suspect that we will see a vandal beast riding contingent.

I wonder how the system will evaluate the skills involved with building a man-beast interface. Also please add a Interrogation or torture : Novice skill to Ves's sheet. It would make me laugh. View More

I feel sympathetic to the dwarves. Ves is an a-hole. .

Of course this was all foreshadowed when Ves's cousin told him he was starting to act like a stereotypical holo drama mech designer (aka the villain).

I'm not sure what to think about the disregard for the dwarves' basic humanity. View More

He can shoot just fine... The software just makes him better at it. View More

BatouOfNexus: True, but Ves has minimal training with them and is relying on software to do his targeting for him now. He basically took enough training to not shoot himself in the foot and to have decent aim. Other than that he doesn’t spend hours a day practicing combat. I don’t think Ves thinks personal protection is useless, he obviously doesn’t with his arsenal, but he does feel his primary source of protection should be other skilled combatants.

I have the utmost respect for a trebuchet... Under 6x gravity a properly designed trebuchet would be like a WW1 railway cannon. Not as easy to aim but still powerful. View More

BatouOfNexus: Well to be fair, any giant boulder slung over city walls is going to pack a hell of a lot of force. Under 6x acceleration of gravity, it’s going to hurt a lot since the velocity as it comes down will be high and the force increases at the square of the velocity. Assuming it falls 6x faster (acceleration is not linear so probably higher than 6) you are talking 36x more force than on earth at a minimum for that rock.

Throwing knives only works if you practice. If you don't drop significant time practicing and learning to measure distance visually then knives tend to be less accurate than rocks and about as damaging. (I used to throw hawk and knife.) Knives are a pita. Even with proper technique, if you don't judge the distance for the spin just right they tend to bounce. If you just sling it at the target don't be surprised if it bounces and comes flying back at you. View More

BatouOfNexus: Throwing knives?

The Mech Touch · C765

The question isn't "Why knives?" as a country boy I respect the utility of knives immensely. (I can't count the times I got to school as a high school student before realizing that I was carrying both a folding knife and a lighter... They were banned but "chores"...) My question is why 10? That's a truly outstanding number of knives.

Also he hasn't seemed to have trained in combat with knives or in throwing them. Using a knife in hand to hand combat without training is like asking for someone to take it away and stab you with it. Throwing a knife on the other hand requires technique and practice. You have to be able to judge the distance and it takes significant practice. If you are half a rotation off then you are just as likely to bounce the hilt off...

That's assuming Exlor didn't actually mean something like a pop out blade that is actually attached to the elbow or fist. View More

Dwwolf: Knives dont put out enough energy to be detected across a solar system.

Ditto noise from a slug thrower.

Also who would check for stealthed knives on a mech designer ?
Hardly the type to go for physical combat.

But they are good enough to cut steel.....he could use em to escape.

Nykooo: I'd say it's normal in a free society to be disturbed by Ketis behavior. She doesn't annoy me because she serves a purpose in the story telling. It may be as little as to put in our faces thruth we take for granted. It easy to forget that barely 150 years ago, some form of slavery were wildly used on Earth. I hope Ketis runs out of money and sent to Haines for weeks. I think it would do her good.
