When Arran decides to become a mage, he quickly discovers that magic can be more dangerous than he had ever imagined. Soon, he finds himself hunted for powers he never knew he had. Helped by a mysterious mage with secret motives, he sets off on a journey to escape his enemies. But where will he run? And can he trust his helper? Pursued by mages and monsters alike, he knows there is only one true road to safety: to become stronger than his enemies! ——— Paragon of Destruction is classic fantasy with strong xianxia/xuanhuan influences, lots of action, and a variety of characters from different backgrounds. Release schedule: 1 chapter/day. Content advisory: strong violence, strong language, and some sexual content.

Moments

I suppose it wouldn't be too much of a spoiler to say that the moment where the importance of his Destruction Realm finally becomes apparent is fast approaching.

In fact, it might even have more than one use. View More

Mrbaker: Love this novel but quick question is he ever going to used his power that he started out with?? Pretty much the whole time it’s been sealed and never used.

The Forms focus on Fire and Shadow, but there's significant overlap with other types of magic (and even swordsmanship).

Think of it as a book with basic French cooking techniques, which an inexperienced cook tries to use for Italian and Indian dishes. Some of it will still apply, but using the techniques for French dishes will be much more productive.

Basically, Arran initially misused the Forms, since he didn't fully understand their purpose and nature. Now that he knows what he's doing, his path will be a bit smoother. View More

rrandomm: Thanks for the explanation. That helps!
One last thing that broke my immersion: ch 394 says that the forms he obtained focus on fire and shadow, yet in ch 315 he seemed to pick out all the forms needed for windblade, forceshield, and essence draw. I guess those were only the forms that they share with fire and shadow?

He realized in chapter 370 that his initial view of the Forms was wrong, and that they are to be studied "as a whole rather than a set of parts," since studying each also helps him understand all the others.

Since he'd memorized all the Forms, at that point he takes a different approach and starts studying the whole rather than the parts.

I suppose my description of that may not have been entirely clear, though. View More

rrandomm: Chapter 315 says that the amulet has thousands of forms, and Arran chose a little over a hundred to practice: the ones for wind blade, force shield, and essence draw. So he has been working with less than 10% of the forms that he has.

As you've undoubtedly noticed, I've been having some trouble getting back into the rhythm of writing again. I understand that this has been rather frustrating for you all, and the same holds true for me -- there are few things as unpleasant as staring at an empty document without words appearing.

To fix that, I've cleared my schedule for the next few weeks, so I can focus on doing nothing but writing. I can't promise that I'll be able to produce regular daily updates again immediately, but I can promise that I will try my hardest. View More

As you all may have noticed, the resumption of updates was short-lived. That's because this past week, my grandfather died. Because of that, updates will be spotty until after the funeral next week.

And yes, as far as I'm concerned, 2020 can go **** itself with a rake. View More

TL;DR: Paragon of Destruction is back, and there will be daily updates again, starting today.

The (slightly) longer version:

After my stepfather's funeral, I took a week off from writing to gather my thoughts. Unfortunately, what I hadn't planned for was getting the flu and spending the two weeks that followed in bed. Which is exactly what happened.

But I'm (mostly) better now, so PoD is back. And hopefully, I've already burned through enough bad luck to last me the rest of the year. View More

It was my stepfather, actually. My grandfather is still hanging on for now, though it probably won't last much longer.
So yeah, 2020 isn't great, so far. View More

A quick update on the lack of updates:
Due to a death in the family, I haven't had much time to write. The normal update schedule should resume sometime next week, View More

A quick update on the lack of chapters these past few days:

I just found out this week that my grandfather has terminal cancer, so I've been preoccupied with things other than writing for the past few days.

I'll try to get back to posting daily chapters from today on, though.

I hope you all understand. View More

slaev: so lemme get this straight, if someone with the ability of seeing - but doesnt have the ability to create them the same way the lords do - at least one of these possible attacks and preparing to defend the possible real one, the Lord can basically change his real attack and strike the enemy where he isn't expecting? cause if thats so, then holy **** this is OP

rrandomm: So Rannoc succeeded in enraging Kadun; presumably to impede Kadun's ability to fight carefully.

Wragged: Even with how far Arran has come and how much he has learned, I get the feeling that his true opponent has yet to reveal themself and is far beyond anyone he has met yet. By the end of the story, being the patriarch of a valley will sound like a nice relaxing retirement plan.

Thanks, fixed it! It's odd, how I can check it half a dozen times, and still not notice that an entire word is missing. View More

rrandomm: Missing word?
"there was a noticeable change in the mood of their small group after Rannoc's." --> "Rannoc's offer"? "Rannoc's words"?

Pexis: I think Rannoc doesnt know it was the mercenaries that killed his niece, so it increases the ******* between the 2 lords, and imperium being more attractive was explained before, something about them being more accepting of commoners than the mages (or at least the appearance, since ppl outside have no info about how their society works)

I'm actually a bit of a medieval weapons enthusiast, but sometimes reality just doesn't work that well for fiction.

In reality, a 7-pound Zweihänder is about the biggest weapon you'd see, and even that would be used more like a polearm than a sword.

But in a story like this, where dragons and magic are real, oversized swords that weigh hundreds of pounds have a place.

At least, for me they do. View More

laandra: While your story is great and I enjoy it alot. I think that you should put a bit more research in medibal weapons and how they were used and what for.
I recomend watching a few youtube videos on the subject if you have the time. I lnow Shadiversity has a few interesting videos on problems with giant swords used by super powerful individuals.

Poleaxes (or pollaxes) can have any combination of hammer/spike, axe/hammer, or axe/hammer.

The difference with a halberd is that a halberd has a larger and flatter axe head, with the entire head usually made from a single piece of metal. By contrast, poleaxes are generally made from interlocking pieces of metal, with a denser construction.

The main difference is one of role. The halberd is an infantry weapon intended to be used against lightly armored and unarmored opponents, while the poleaxe is a knightly weapon intended to be used against armored opponents.

Here's a 15th century poleaxe with an axe head and spike:

And here's a halberd from the same era:

LallarLeo: Author, I belive your description of a poleaxe is more simmilar to a halberd. Poleaxes usually have an axe head with a hammer head on the opposite side. Other than that, love the story.

Gentleman613: More than 300 chapters in, I'm enjoying this book as much as before. Arran has made strides on the path to power, knows where he wants to go, and is not a psycopath. The various powerful beings he's encountered really add to the mythos of the world he's in, though we've only encountered a church recently. The apocalyptic scenes he's experienced makes me wonder if and how his world will be destroyed, and if he's the answer to it somehow. I guess we'll find out, because this author has a plan.

Grutte Pier s a pretty cool historical figure.

Somewhere around 1515, a mercenary band in the employ of the Habsburgs burned down his farm and murdered his wife.

In response, he spent the next 5 years waging war against the Habsburgs' allies, razing several cities and sinking dozens of ships.

Supposedly, he was seven feet tall, wielding a seven-foot sword with which he could behead multiple enemies at once.

And according to legend, he was strong enough to carry horses, and once beat five armed enemies to death with a plow. View More

He's already focusing on Body Refinement.

Remember, with the Blood Ruin/Dragon's Ruin, he absorbs Natural Essence extremely well. And there's a ton of that in the giant digger meat.

And I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say that he's not going to ignore the Forms, either. View More

JPNovelFan: Let me ask you a question in return. Why would you give him tools to be unrivaled amongst everyone he could face if you aren’t going to have him use those tools to be stronger? If he wasn’t pressed for time, sure no complaints. But you’ve set up this upcoming dire war and instead of having him actually become proficient in what he has, you’ve just adding something else to his toolbox. If you need a screwdriver for a screwdriver’s job, then use a screwdriver. He says he needs to be stronger when he isn’t facing multiple enemies? Then why not have him focus on body refinement to solve that issue. Not use a weapon that doesn’t even make sense.

Paragon of Destruction · C341

Why do you think that adding a second weapon will stop him from continuing his training? View More

JPNovelFan: Yes, war against small and fast humans=let’s get a giant weapon meant to face large beasts.

Oh, my strength when I am not powered by slaughtering many foes is weak. Yes, a giant weapon for large beasts will solve the fact that I am weak when I am not powered slaughter.

Spending time cultivating my body to instead be stronger in the normal state? No! A weapon meant to slay large beasts is what I need!

I might have to kill a lord in the future, someone vastly stronger and more nimble and quicker than myself? A weapon meant to slay large beasts is what I need. Screw cultivating my body further?

I’ve seen knights use insights inside their bodies. Oh, I DEFINITELY can’t use that to think about how to do it because I instead need a weapon meant for large beasts.

Living star metal sword that I haven’t even completely connected with that refuses repeatedly to be in any shape other than a sword? Let’s make a weapon for slaying large beasts!

Cmon mr author. You can’t be this ignorant to you ideas and what you’re writing, right? Like does any of this make any sense?

It's not that he forgot, it's that it's one of his overarching goals in the Imperium. This was just a small chance of a potential shortcut, which unfortunately did not pan out. But he arrived in the Imperium only recently, so it stands to reason that there will be more opportunities. View More

JPNovelFan: Glad that you think so. It worries me that you potentially forgot about that when you had him list his goals and it wasn’t included. His own fear/instinct that facing the Lord should still be deeply ingrained in him. You’d think that fear/instinct of a powerful foe would drive him to not forget something like being able to learn their techniques. Seeing him casually forget to mention that, is all that caused me to worry. Glad you at least recognize the importance as well haha.
