I'm guessing they could still smell his blood and were angry so that's why he couldn't cross. He had to clean it first so they couldn't smell him.
Maybe the "stone" that cut him was one of the wolves bones who Lucan left behind. My guess is they were sacrifices for the Voices.
I agree with you! I wonder if he had gotten to close to the Traverse and maybe they latched onto him or if they were brought through the portal by an Anima and somehow given to him.
