What do you mean no innovative gameplay ? It is a portal, it was so innovative that valve has invited a students who created a prototype of this game and then gave them a budget to work on it.
The portal is a popular franchise from Tanaka's past life, it doesn't have any innovative gameplay nor any crazy graphics, instead it was a role first person puzzle game with a cool story line and some cranky jokes.
