I think it was implied that Ren's parents knew Matthew very well since he did say 'They are like my second parents' Moreover, I think Ren was no longer a child when he started stealing the documents. It did skip to middle school. I do agree that they should've been more cautious, but well, he could've just stolen the info from his father's office inside of a scured location. I mean, parents aren't usually alert against their children.
