While it's never actually said that Zabuza is an A-rank ninja, it's implied when Zabuza first appears. Kakashi says that the mission just went up to A-rank. Thus implying that Zabuza was A-rank. If he'd been S-rank, the mission would've become an S-rank one.
This was a big deal, because if the team assigned this mission were anybody else but team seven then they would have likely died under the assault of Haku and Zabuza; Two S-class Ninjas.

If I were to be honest, I thought my death and meeting that being was just a super funky realistic dream. Knowing I would get to use the powers of Madara, I was completely excited which caused a baby laugh to come out of my mouth. Unknown to me, it prevented a hard slap to my ass.
