Had Heavenly Defiance accepted Shrarzok the Shadows invitation from the very beginning? Had he always been on the demon's side, waiting for the perfect moment to betray humanity? Looking back, Jason realized that was exactly what had happened. Heavenly Defiance had shown his true colors in a major battle that ultimately tipped the war in favor of the Demons. This battle was three years after – Might, Magic, Mayhem – had opened for players on Earth, and it had been a shock to the general population that Heavenly Defiance, the strongest of the Users, had defected to the enemy's side.

She and the kids also had to wait in line to register for the guilds they wanted, go listen to lectures, practice stuff and then have their respective "aha" moments. I figured adding all that into the story would be boring and useless to the plot. So yes, she was very quick to learn it all, but it took her a while to get to the point of learning about mana, which gave Jason enough time to obtain his "first" achievements.
Beth had always been an avid fanatic of yoga and meditation; a love she tried instilling in her children but was never able to. After listening to the instructions of the Magic Instructor at the Adventurers Guild, she found that it was very similar to how she felt while meditating and so she gave it a try. After about a minute she obtained the skill mana sense, and an hour later she received mana manipulation.

Its about standard for spec ops guys in the states from what I understand.
Already knowing what the "special" offer was going to be, Jason nodded and waited for the Chief to finish his spiel. Essentially the offer was about $200,000 with half of it to be paid up front and the rest at the end of the 6 year re-enlistment period.
