Basically, though the SAO setting is AU and isn't as video game-like. This version of SAO has become the real world, so it's a bit different, plus MC doesn't know the game that well at the start and mostly relies on real-life skills + rational planning early on.
(A/N: In case it's not clear, this is no longer virtual, and the game has become reality, though the players have no way of knowing that. Since there'll probably be confusion, I'll just say it: all non-players have been exterminated, the game (by that I mean my heavily, heavily altered version) has become reality (the players can't be sure of that fact), and the world itself is heavily altered. Hope that clears up any confusion.)

The origin of the rapier is slightly ambiguous, and prominently involves Italy and Spain. It evolved from earlier types of side-sword, and the precise moment when it became a 'rapier' isn't set in stone. While the MC is often somewhat ignorant, calling the rapier Italian is much less unreasonable than several of his other statements.
I don't want a rapier. It's made by Italians, and I will not trust a weapon made by vain, effeminate fashionistas to keep me safe in the masculine art of combat.

It is not Reginald that is the source of this, that is for sure. Admittedly, he's the only living person whom we absolutely know was at the scene of the fire, so that might lead to suspicion towards him. But since we know that there's an intruder, who has so far evaded detection, it would be more reasonable to suppose that this phantom menace started the fire instead. It was not one of my men, we didn't start the fire.
