I also read honkai fanfic due to chat group as well. it was a Chinese MTL fanfic yet I don't know about honkai. Also, no need to worry, since I won't follow canon so either way, it will be a different experience if you read my fanfic or the original. At most, reading the original will allow you to know the characters and the main plot. But not reading it won't hinder your reading experience.
