i don't find it logical a ragtag group as a first line of defence?? won't Enemy spy's easily penetrate borders. there is also chance of sudden secret invasion with lack of trainjng and equipment and facilities these watchman won't even be able to send msg of reinforcement or warning they will be massacred before that. why don't they just give that territory to some duke to protect it would be much logical as that's the real nobles duty or why there is nobles in first place.
