There are competitions held by department stores, boutiques, and then there's reality shows to get recognized as a designer. Designers can't just open a studio and become famous designers. Rent has to be paid, advertising, you need KOL's and fashion mags to recognise the designer and someone has to pay studio and boutique rent, the staff, the materials, and electricity. Conglomerates, venture capitalists and individual investors fund this even if the designer comes from a wealthy background. The FL is freelancing when hired by the Lee conglomerate based in River Town (fictional Chinese city). As a new employee she would be expected to move where the company headquarters are located to develop working relationships with the company and to learn and see how the company markets itself. It's key that you understand that she had to go. If Google hires you, you're going to the Google campus to be immersed in the company's mission. If you say she should have stayed in Paris instead of going back to where her crap family is, you don't understand how fashion or international business works because your only choice is to go - or refuse the job. The second thing to understand is the sale of a business. The Lee company is in the midst of a merger and acquisition with CBS company when the F and her son reach River Town.This is surprising to the FL but it's clear that she knows her talents are a saleable asset for Lee and CBS. Love this story not because it’s typical but such male does exist. Just that the difference would be how much and how well they cope with all the attention and love their hearts can muster
