Even with a mana shield, it would be pointless if they can't counterattack. It would take too long to cast a spell and the mage can't run away because the duelist who relys of physical strength would be too fast. So the duelist will engage them in close-combat and absolutely thrash the mana shield, the shield will always eventually break, thus the duelist proceeds to manhandle the mage. If the mage can learn close-combat they would be able to at least counter or dodge the attack, giving them the opportunity to run away, counter, or cast a spell.

However, with electro-magnetism, I could create a barrier strong enough to stop an attack. I can do that by creating magnetic fields to exert a braking force to effectively slow an attack down or bring it to a halt. This principle was commonly used back in my old world with stuff like trains, roller coasters, and industrial machinery where precise control of motion was required.
