I think he stayed because he fell in love. It is possible he simply didn't want to see his wife die. His grandchild is extremely talented due to him. You are right though, his wife maybe aware somewhat.

Roland should always be using Dimensional anchor as his first move against mages. He said he can instantly cast it before, why did he use a scroll?
