So the government just left the spacecraft there like that? But why? I mean why not take it if it's operational? I get that they built a bigger one and this is the old original alien craft but what's the point of not taking it to space with more of the important people of earth stowed?

rocks and bullets aren't the best mixture - those dead bodies actually are far better protection, not to mention drastically reducing ricochets
