People would always complain if we go on writing harem, or write ***, or kill our character. Who cares.... just write, we write for ourselves not for others. Their hate, their grief, their anger is our fuel to write. Many great Writer have their inner Troll spirit, that we still read their writings even when we think their character being a retard worse than we are. Be a Joker, people would hate us? So What? We are god in our Fic, and our Fiction is our world where we do what we want.

Just write what you think comfortable to continue the story. Your story is quite decent, not reaching top level yet in the story telling and characters as ATG itself is quite a cliche of Xianxia novel. You could make the younger character out of canon character if you like. Just not too fixated on the canon timeline and events.
